What happens in the US can affect the rest of the world (unfortunately) so I think having a thread focused on US news is a good idea. I'd like the conversation here to be a bit more lighthearted so jokes are welcome.

To kick it off:

"Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said."

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/us-world/article/Senior-Associate-Justice-Antonin-Scalia-found-6828930.php

He will truly be missed *wipes tear on American themed napkin*

In other news from yesterday:

"The Democratic National Committee has rolled back restrictions introduced by presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008 that banned donations from federal lobbyists and political action committees."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/dnc-allowing-donations-from-federal-lobbyists-and-pacs/2016/02/12/22b1c38c-d196-11e5-88cd-753e80cd29ad_story.html

It's good to see the DNC is keeping money out of politics, go Hillary!

Aren't all the threads in this site about the US already?

The majority aren't actually. There is much more focus on history than current events and this thread is intended to discuss the latter.

Currently the republicans are pushing for the next judge of the SCOTUS to be appointed by the next POTUS, not Obama.

Also the Democratic polls are so close it's insane.

What will be interesting is if Sanders wins the popularly selected delegates. Will the superdelegates go to Sanders, or overturn the popular result? Doing so would probably cause a huge legitimacy crisis. It seems they exist mostly to confuse people so as to influence the popular vote, but would they actually go as far as to overturn a popular decision?

I think it depends how close the delegate count is. If he pulls ahead by a wide margin it would look really bad for superdelegates to stay with Clinton so I think they would flip.
