Saw it on the weekend. Don't really know what to say about it other tha the fact that I thought it was going to be acartoon.
Where does burton get his ideas?!

It's adapted from a novel, by whom I cannot recollect, I thought it was overly sentimental - at times even mawkish.. An interesting take on father/son relationships, personal perceptions and self determination..

mawkish in relation to what? the concepts built into the movie, or the novel upon which it was based?
the movie was sort of more about the cycle of life than the father son relationship to me.
will be interested to find out how much burton took from the book and how much he divulged upon on his own. since it is burton, and not some hack director, my guess would be that he took as little from the book as possible.

I've never been much enamoured of his childlike fairytale telling, I haven't forgiven him for the Planet of the apes fiasco yet..

i found it too fantastical, or as i call it "too disney". and Burton isnt a good director he did such craptastical films like Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, Frankenwinie and the "remake" of Planet Of The Apes and he produced Batman Forever  and Cabin Boy <_< .
He has only had a few gems in his career, and he didnt even direct Nigntmare Before Christmas.

 Apparently his next work is a version of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (http://imdb.com/title/tt0367594/) so expect absolutly nothing like the 70's musical with Gene Wilder. Probally be as bad as James and The Giant Peach was,

james and the giant peach was crap. i was 9 when i saw it and even i could tell it was second rate.
however, burton is AWESOME. i saw "edward scissorhands" for the first time yesterday. i loved it sooooo much. i mean, you don't get weirder plots than that. the haircuts, the gardening. and then at the end where winona ryder as the grandma does her little bit about "before he came down here, it never snowed. now it still does. sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it" brought a tear to my eye. and then allixpeeke ruined the magic by asking where he got the blocks of ice from. grrrrrr...

Mars Attacks was funny....
Though the advert for Tom Jones was a pain in the ass.

Edward scissor hands is a masterpiece. I liked big fish's fairytale style, it was a refreshing turn from everything i've been watching lately. ALSO- JOHNNY DEPP AS WILLY WONKA- FUCK ME! that is going to be great. i remember a depp interview from many years ago in which he was asked what character he would like to play the most if he could choose anyone- who did he pick- you guessed it- old willy wonka. that's the second good movie i've heard about today. the first- andre3000 as jimi hendrix in a movie made by the hughes brothers. -theres another connection to depp- their last movie was from hell. anyway.. some good movies coming up.

I haven't seen it yet, from what I have heard about it. It doesn't really interest me all that much , it's based on the book Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace. It's meant to be like Forrest Gump and pretty close to the novel, I hear
Tim Burton did Bettlejuice as well, he has done so crap films but some pretty good ones as well, ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands come to mind, also Sleepy Hollow as well. That could just be Johnny Depp's influence though but I wouldn't call him particularly a great director. Johnny Depp and him must be a fan of each others work though, if he is going to play Willy Wonka, it ought to be..interesting at least.
They have already did a Hendrix film, it wasn't the best however but this new one does sound interesting. Hopefully they do justice to the great man :)
