Why We Demand the Immediate Arrest of Mayor Emanuel

From ANSWER Chicago (Act Now to Stop War and Racism)

First, a question for all of us:

How can there be real justice for Black people, workers and poor people of Chicago and the United States, if Mayor Emanuel is not held accountable for his blatantly obvious crimes in the cover-up of the police lynching of Laquan McDonald?

With his popularity at 18 percent, the growing mass demand that Mayor Emanuel resign is very attainable. If Rahm, one of the most powerful politicians in the world, were forced out of office by the anti-racist uprising, it would be a huge development. It would put the entire system on notice and it would embolden and increase the ranks of the fighters for justice.

We need to turn up the heat on the criminal Emanuel regime: Everyone should join the December 18 protest to force Mayor Emanuel to resign. (http://answerchicago.nationbuilder.com/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fevents%2F9390 80906176194%2F&e=a848ef455e23b28b6da327e31ded573f&utm_source=answerchicago&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=emanuel&n=3)

The sacking of one politician, however, will not solve the problem. The U.S. system of rule by the rich, inherently unequal, is propped up racism, second class citizenship for Black people, mass incarceration and cops who routinely execute Black people with impunity.

The arrest of Rahm for murder is not too much to ask, not in any sense. Emanuel in chains would be a much needed straight forward matter of justice for Laquan McDonald and all Black people. No one who criminally obstructs justice in response to a police lynching should be able to walk freely among us—period.

Mayor Emanuel, from his position of authority, poses the greatest danger to the citizens of Chicago—not only for his complicity in Laquan McDonald’s murder, but for waging a calculated war on working, poor and Black people on behalf of the rich and their domination of society. The system he protects must face real consequences for its crimes.

Arrest the mayor now!

The mayor needs to be arrested immediately and charged with murder. Under Illinois law, that is a correct charge in this case. He knew about the police lynching and aided and abetted officer Jason Van Dyke in avoiding capture and prosecution. He should also be charged with “concealment of homicidal death” and obstruction of justice.

It would be a great advance in the new mass struggle against racism if the movement in Chicago demanded the mayor’s arrest for his obvious crimes regarding the cover-up of Laquan McDonald’s murder. It would send an impossible to ignore signal to all the administrators of this system that racists, no matter what position they may hold, must be held fully accountable to the people.

Besides Emanuel, Garry McCarthy, Anita Alvarez and every cop involved in the cover-up is guilty of murder according to Illinois law. Arresting them is not inconceivable. Their arrest and punishment, along with reparations for hundreds of years of racist violence and discrimination and full self-determination for the Black community, is at the very heart of justice in this matter.

Is it possible to arrest Emanuel? Yes it is. Is it going to happen? It would certainly take an elevated level of struggle. But isn’t an elevated level of struggle and a mass movement with the strength of an army precisely what is needed to defeat a white-supremacist system that routinely murders Black people on the streets and allows the murderers and accomplices to systematically evade punishment?

500 walk out in Chicago, demand #ResignRahm

Chicago, IL - Chanting, “How many shots? 16 shots!” the second walk-out in a week took the streets in downtown Chicago Dec 18. Protest organizers like Lamon Reccord and Rousemary Vega called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to resign because he covered up the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald for 13 months.

Frank Chapman of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression said that Mayor Emanuel should go, along with State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. Chapman led the crowd in chanting, “Power to the people!” He said, “Community control of the police is needed to bring an end to police crimes against oppressed people.”

Several schools, including Fenger High on Chicago’s South Side, had scores of students leave early to respond to the call for action. A line of grade school children led the front of the march, which wound through Chicao’s Loop and the Magnificent Mile.

Dear Chris,

Democratic politicians cannot claim that Black Lives Matter and then act as if their own careers matter more. Every day, the calls grow louder for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez to resign. People in Chicago and all over the country are outraged at the way these leaders have stood in the way of police accountability and failed to stand with the communities bearing the brunt of police brutality and overreach.

Tens of thousands of CREDO activists have joined local activists and activists from Democracy for America, ColorOfChange, and MoveOn to demand that Emanuel and Alvarez resign. But they seem to think they can ride out the storm.

It’s time to turn up the pressure. This Monday, December 21, our friends at ColorOfChange are working with local activists to deliver your petition signatures directly to Emanuel and Alvarez’ offices in the Loop. Can you join them? Click here to RSVP.

What: Petition delivery demanding that Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez resign.

When: Monday, December 21, 11:00 a.m.

Where: Thompson Center Plaza (corner of Randolph and La Salle Streets), 100 W. Randolph Street Chicago, IL 60601

Details: Meet delivery organizers for a short press conference in the plaza at the Thompson Center, at the corner of Randolph and La Salle Streets, then walk across the street to the Mayor’s Office to deliver petitions urging Rahm Emanuel to resign. Then walk two blocks to Anita Alvarez’s office and deliver petitions urging her to resign.

The people of Chicago are taking to the streets because they know that Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez have spent years shielding violent, killer cops from justice. They understand that until both resign, it will not be possible to fix Chicago’s police department and ensure everyone gets justice.

Join CREDO and our allies from Chicago and across America to deliver your message and your signatures directly to Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez.

Thank you for standing up for black lives and police accountability.

Two African Americans murdered by Chicago Police

By staff

Chicago, IL - Bettie Jones and Quintonio Legrier are the names of the latest victims of the Chicago Police Department.

Jones was a 57-year-old mother of five. Legrier was a college student at Northern Illinois University.

The police were called to the apartment building before dawn, Dec. 26, the day after Christmas because of an argument between Legrier and his father. Legrier was not armed, holding only a baseball bat.

Activists in the movement to stop police crimes rushed to the scene when word of the shootings got out. A local minister pointed to a bullet hole in the door, which fit a witness’s description of the killing of Jones, who was a neighbor of the Legrier family. Jones’ daughter explained that her mother opened the door and was shot by a cop who was still outside.

According to LaCreshia Birts of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, “One of the family members said, “Take ‘Serve and Protect’ off police cars.”

Frank Chapman of the Alliance reacted to this latest killing this way, “Each day we don’t do anything about holding the police accountable is another day we endanger the lives of our people.” He continued, “The killers should be charged immediately and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Hearing the news on the phone, Chapman paused and then said, “When does it stop? It’ll start to end when we have an elected, civilian police accountability council.”
