I figured there should be a thread keeping track of the gains made by the National Front following the Paris attacks and discussing the (real and self-proclaimed) socialist response to them.
The good news is that they failed to win control of any regions, but that really is a Pyrrhic victory.
Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls stressed there wasn't any room for complacency."Tonight, no sigh of relief, no sign of triumphalism," he said. "The danger of the far-right is still around."
The main reason the far-right fell short of its goals is the strategic withdrawal of "Socialist" candidates to avoid splitting the vote away from centre-right candidates. I for one hope that this might encourage a popular turn to non-electoral means of resisting fascism.
A fascist with whom I went to university always spoke of Marine Le Pen as one of the best hopes for the far-right, and that was before the Paris attacks.
