Dear RevLeft,

I am a nerd. And more specifically I'm a fantasy nerd. I love books such as LOTR and ASOIAF. And that's why I created the Council of Revolutionaries for Appreciation of High-Fantasy. A group made of Revolutionaries who love any and all fantasy.

Join CRAHF today!

With Respect,

Redeagle

That's not how you become a sectarian.

First of all, you must defend the Norn Deformed Workers' State's right to magical weapons.

Second you must raise the call "Down with the Dark One! No to the Aes Sedai!"

Finally you have to split. I don't care if you're one person. It has to happen.

See? We already have the dogmatics that attempt to teach us how to be sectarian! I will be sectarian the way I want, I don't have to split from some party, I can split from my own party!

In the case, the party for the Fourth World Revolutionary Movement, whose split is the Dothraki Socialist Party of Boat-Building.

RE-UNITE THE SOCIALIST DOTHRAKI HORDES!

No wait I just realised I'm massively stuck up and that the hype for GoT makes me cringe when I hear someone mention Martin (except for his SF work which makes me cringe for other reasons). I didn't use to be like this, either. But ech.

I'll be the first to admit that High-fantasy is filled with cliches and really is getting old.But come on, you've got to love the classics.

I also represent the Boat-building Trotskyist world party not the DAMN Dothraki Socialist Party of Boat-Building.

I nominate R. Scott Bakker as our head of the CRAHF Cheka.

Seriously, have you READ the lunacy that is The Second Apocalypse? As a wise critic once said: "Most dark fantasy is considered dark and gritty. But Bakker's books are pitch black and sticky".

I'll have to read that!

Anyway. I've got a challenge for revleft. I want someone to take a picture from lord of the rings (Movie) and attach faces of various communists where their heads should be.

A current favorite author of mine is Peter Orullian, the author of the ongoing The Vault of Heaven.

Orullian was originally (and still is) a singer and songwriter, and his poetic writing style shows it. Also his world's magic system which is based around music and sound.

The first book, The Unremembered, uses a typical quest fantasy within his personal universe that ultimately takes a VERY dark turn towards the end that ultimately subverts a lot of the common tropes of epic fantasy in general. By the second book, Trial of Intentions, many of the characters are dealing with the repercussions of the first book whilst also trying to do everything they can to prevent a coming war that threatens to wreck the entire world.

Awesome! This is the type of discussion I like! I didn't know about these guys and to be honest I love books that undermine fantasy tropes like that.
