This is pretty much a pointless question followed up by a long, rambling post, but...

...Do any of you know anything about Belize's politics? I know that it's a fairly stable country, left-leaning and an ally with Cuba.

Last summer, I was in Belize doing conservation work at a field station, and the subject of politics came up a few times. I ended up (it's a long story) meeting the President at the end of my time in Belize. His name is Said Musa, and he seems to be very U$ friendly, while at the same time very friendly to Cuba.

There are several political parties in Belize, all with very strong leaders. The only one that comes to mind right now is the PUP, which I believe is the party in leadership.

I doubt that anyone will know anything about this, but if by some chance any of you do, I'm very interested in learning about Belize's politics. I may be going back next year --- I've been invited back by the conservation group which I did work for last summer --- and it would be useful to know a bit more about the country's politics.

This is my point of view. My Parents are from Belize, and my family is full
of PUP Supporters and a Former PUP Politician. I Furthermore believe that Belize should be a communist state - it has all the conditions for a Communist state.

It seems to be perfect for Communism, however Belize is very pro-U.S. (officially, at least), and Belize makes most of its money currently from American tourism.

That seems to be the problem. For me Belizeans have to also be more politically aware of their form of government.

Very true. This past summer, very few Belizeans knew enough to tell me about Belize's politics and political system. A few seemed very knowledgable, though. I learned the most about the system from President Musa himself. He is a member of the PUP, is he not?

By the way, are you (or your parents) familiar with the Programme for Belize, by any chance?

He's the head of State for Belize - Said Musa. And yes. He is the leader of the PUP.

This Program - go into detail on that... is it the tourist program?

It's actually an independent conservation program (run by only Belizeans), with several field stations in Northern Belize, in the Orange Walk District. The Programme for Belize is a great group - they've saved huge amounts of rainforest, established all sort of new methods of study, and made several important discoveries in the rainforest. They are the premier independent conservation group of Belize, and they carry quite a bit of weight in Belize City.

I was just curious about whether or not you'd heard of it --- I was with them last year and I probably will be again in the future.

But in response to your earlier point, it seems that Belize would be perfect for Communism. The atmosphere is just right. People (in general) aren't so materialistic at all (at least not from what I saw). Musa and Castro are apparently "great friends," but at the same time Musa is constantly sucking up to Bush.

The PUP is a party that holds historical sigificance to me. My Granfather
was a PUP politician- He's now retired.

Also, I believe that Communism can be achived in Belize only by revolution.

Why?

because the PUP & The UDP are always doing the same thing, There are
even people in Belize that hate each other because they are affiliated with
the UDP or the PUP. The PUP always gives out houses to Party members,
while UDP abuses their economy.

Cuba - before it's Revolution was called the "Whorehouse of the Carribean"
and because Cuba became communist - The US is trying to destroy them with an embargo.

Belize - The PUP and the UDP have made sigificant mistakes for me to see
that Anarcho-Communism is suitable for Belize on a whole. Areas Like Dangriga and Punta Gorda are provety-stricken and all the government
can do is to say "We'll do best we can to help you.."

In a Communist Belize - The Government can find a way to develop it's resources with some tourism. But Sugar Cane or other crops can be used.
A house or would be guaranteed to every family, and there would be local
Collectives who will fund public institutions like education.

The only obstacle to that is The Young People, the Right-Wingers and of course the USA.

By the way - your program sounds interesting...i think my parents should know about it.

Do you go to Belize often, Linux? I got quite a good, average Belizean's look at the northern area of Belize, something that not many Americans have the privelege of doing. Or maybe they just don't want to.

I saw quite a bit of poverty in Northern Belize. I was with a Belizean boy lots of the time. He was very smart, and full of potential, but at the end of my time in Belize I saw his home. It was a tiny, collapsing pink shack, with chicken running around in the dusty roads. And that was probably the nicest house in the village.

Belize seems to be developing some major... parallels. Tourism is majorly increasing, and "nice" resorts for Americans are opening all over the place. I saw my share of rich, fat, obnoxious American tourists at fancy "Jungle Spas" in Belize. The Americans are running the country, and rapidly becoming a neccesary means of income for the government. American tourism (and Belize's dependence on it) is a major roadblock on the road to Socialism or Communism in Belize.

I don't know too much about the UDP and PUP. Could you tell me some more about their positions and their leadership?

Glad to find someone who likes to talk about Belize as much as I do.

I have'nt been to Belize since i was 12 months old. However, i keep up with the news in Belize via the internet - Belizean Newspapers my family sends
me, and listening to Belizean radio on the internet - if i have the time..

I also have a deeper insight of both political parties because i research them
alot.

American Tourism needs to be cut off from Belize's infasturcture. Because
The Tourists gives the money for Belize to function - then you've got
to wonder - is Democracy destroying Belizean Culture and replacing it
with a American Monocluture?

Once Belize finds a Cash Crop, and alternative trading partners like Japan, or
France, With Some tourism of course, Then American Tourism won't be so nessecary to Belize.

The Other Threat to Making Communism a reality in Belize Is the Political System. Both political parties like to hog resources in Belize and they make
little improvments in some essential parts that Belize needs to function in.

They there is the Young People - And the educational system in Belize. Kids
HAVE to pay for School...that's absurd. And the Young people are losing touch with their cluture. And getting more used to Americanization
which i oppose 100% Percent.

Americanization is a major problem in Belize. Belize's amazing mix of cultures is quickly being replaced by Nike, Coca-Cola, American pop music --- American culture.

Tourism is destroying Belize, and with every day Belize is becoming more dependent on it.

I'm in my highschool history class right now, and we just happen to be discussing the Confederate Army's exodus to Belize after the Civil War. An extremely interesting subject, and the beginning of Belize's Americanization, I suppose. But that's off the subject.

Basically, I doubt that Belize is going to change, at least not without revolution. It's such a peaceful country, too. Revolution doesn't seem to be on Belize's horizon.

It would be my dream to live in Belize, and maybe to help organize the Socialist Party there. But I'm probably too white, and too American. :(

Then again, I'm only about as white as Said Musa! I guess there's always hope. :)

I Think Revolution can only be achived in Belize with a Socialist Party.
Belize eurupts with Socialism - It will be the responsibility of a Belizean People's Socialist Party (PSP) to control industries, to end Illiteracy, to
provide National security from it's neighbors, to Nationalize small industries (if needed) to provide subsidized healthcare, free internet access, to limit
Americanization into Belize, And to Make Belizeans More politically aware, to
abolish currency and replace it with Labor notes, to organize local collectives, to preserve Belizean culture, and to go the way of real communism. Belize Will better off this way than it is now.

All of those things are so desperately needed in Belize. Thinking about it, I believe that Socialism would take better root in Belize than probably any other Latin American country. The mindset there is already a Socialist one. All the people of Belize need is a push in the right direction --- or the left direction, I suppose.

Are you planning on going back to Belize?

Yes... I'm Planning to go back to Belize. All the belizeans need is to have a
Socialist Party called the PSP and they'll be in the left direction.

The PSP... good idea. I'd be very glad to be of any help if it were ever possible. I love Belize, and I'd like to think that it's not in the "rich, loud American who loves the real Belize (i.e. 5-Star "Jungle" Hotels)."

Not to get too focused on race at all, but what's your ethnicity? There are quite a few in Belize, as I'm sure you know, and they all seem to coexist pretty peacefully. Now that you don't find everywhere.
