So I was explaining to my mom about socialism/communism. She Had a series of questions and one of which was "If we wouldn't get paid what would make someone want to work hard(harder). So I guess this is a question from my mom. If anyone could explain that would be great!

The question contains hidden assumptions. For example, that it is good for everyone to work "as hard as possible". Also, that the current system (capitalism) somehow rewards "hard work". Capitalism does not do that. Capitalism rewards having a lot of money with more money. Can you see the problem? :)
