"In the second century of the Christian era, the empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilized portion of mankind. The frontiers of that extensive monarchy were guarded by ancient renown and disciplined valour. The gentle but powerful influence of laws and manners had gradually cemented the union of the provinces. Their peaceful inhabitants enjoyed and abused the advantages of wealth and luxury. ... It is the design of this [book] to deduce the most important circumstances of its decline and fall; a revolution which will ever be remembered, and is still felt by the nations of the earth." - Edward Gibbon, 'History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire'.

When the emperor Romulus was deposed by Odoacer in 476 CE, Roman imperial rule over Western Europe was brought to an end. After centuries of conflict and collaboration, the barbarian tribes had finally emerged victorious over Classical civilisation. From this traumatic event would emerge the feudal institutions which dominated the continent for the next millennium. Yet, as can be seen from Chinese history, the disappearance of the Roman empire was by no means inevitable. With better political and military leadership, the Huns, Vandals and Goths could have been repulsed and the hegemony of the Eternal City perpetuated into the modern epoch.

Class Wargames celebrates this turning point in world history by re-enacting the barbarian invasions of the Roman empire with Terence Donnelly's 'Decline and Fall'.
