1. The exact same thing that has happened for all of Canadian history happened again. Nobody is surprised.
2. OK, not nobody. Some 20-year-old university students are absolutely shocked that Megan Leslie paid the price for being opportunistic, uninspiring, and towing the line on Israel, the tar sands, etc.

Disappointed, but not surprised. Too bad Trudeau isn't the socialist he may seem to be (making the rich pay more so the rest can pay less). A tax hike on doctors and lawyers won't mean anything if you leave corporations alone... But nope, he's a just a Liberal Harper in socialist disguise. We shift between conservative capitalist and liberal capitalist.

"Making the rich pay more..." is capitalism, as obviously the rich and the poor still exist, as does private ownership and markets. What you're describing seems to be, not socialism, but liberal populism.

Ah, you learn something new everyday. Now I can say "populist" instead of "has socialist tendencies," which I basically always meant the dictionary definition of populist. Populism, as I understand it from the dictionary, is like Capitalism with socialist-like ideals (shortening the gap, but not to a great enough extent).

That said, I don't even see Trudeau as a populist, which he seems to advertise to be. That's what I meant to say. :rolleyes: I voted NDP because he actually seems like a populist, because he planned to hike taxes for corporations, remove tax loopholes, etc.

Well, the broad category of "other" - to which both CPC and CPCML belong - got zero seats, and 0.8% of the popular vote, so you can extrapolate from there that it was not a hell of a lot of votes for either party.

I coulda voted for the CPC's Elizabeth Rowley, and considered doing so, but... nah.

Not really. The election was about a rebranding of the government's image, with some superficial and selective discussion of issues. Even an editorialist for the National Post said as much before a CBC anchor dismissively chided her for being "cynical".

Rebranding has to have been the issue. Nobody seemed to care that Justin is not actively opposed to the TPP.
Nobody seemed to care that he also supports Bill C-51 on principle, in spite of some quibbling over certain provisions in the bill.
Nobody seemed to care that the whole fucking system is unable to provide, and that reliance on fossil fuels will continue to destroy the environment.

This passage from Fahrenheit 451 seems poignant:

"'I voted last election, same as everyone, and I laid it on the line for President Noble. I think he's one of the nicest-looking men who ever became president.'

Not in the election per se, no. However, the silencing of Israel's critics within the party was an issue with the party's leftwing base.

CPC-ML finished ninth place, with 9,105 votes. CPC finished fourteenth, with 4,382.

Now that you know, you probably wish you didn't.

Besides the five parliamentary parties, they both finished behind independents, Libertarians, and Christian Heritage. CPC also managed to win less votes than non-afilliated (what's the difference between this and independent, btw?), Strenght in Democracy, Rhinoceros Party (wth?) and Progressive Canadian.

But both finished ahead of the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party, so both versions of Stalinism remain more relevant than delusions that animals are citizens too.

Also - my friend Dan ran for the Rhino Party and still got >150 votes even though most of his friends boycotted the election.
