Not exactly original (I fear Warren Buffet made the joke first), but to the point nevertheless.

Labour is a case study in anti-democracy. It's been clear for a long time that the masses of grassroots members, trades unions, and affiliated union members generally stick up for their own class interests (albeit in a fairly stifled and ineffective way as recent history has shown) in terms of expressing their political ideas, taking political actions such as strikes.

It's therefore odd that for much of its history, the Labour Party has been co-opted by social liberals and political careerists who have no defined ideological backbone, and has been used effectively to act against the interests of both its membership, affiliated unions, and the class it was apparently created to exist.

It's almost a shame that more turncoats didn't fuck off to the SDP back in the 1980s and leave the 'left' to build a proper socialist, working class base. Much is made of the fact that Labour is apparently a broad church, which effectively means that social liberals and political careerists attempt to be as effective as possible in neutering any radical spirit in the Labour Party.
