View Full Version : Bourgeois Individualism - Discussion with Teacher

I have a good philosophy teacher, he asks us quite a lot of questions and put people to think (Ok, he doesn't, no one gives a shit about him and his classes, except some 3 people interested in philosophy and some 5 nerds)

I have realized some time ago he is ideologically bourgeois and defends individual liberty, "free will", etc, like a rabid dog, in his view barbary without any form of government or society is a "good thing"

I have been on some arguments with him, saying basically "but humans can only be free in society, the maximum freedom is in society, outside society and in some mad anarchy humans lose their freedoms to other humans and to themselves and blablabla" my usual method of expelling crap through the mouth orifice.

Has anyone some good books on the matter, so I can actually discuss with him without feeling so intelectually inferior?

Sorry for my horrible english. Ask away if you don't understand.

Not enough info

Tell me exactly what his arguments are

All you've offered us are some incredibly vague arguments that he's put forward. Like Placenta cream said, you'll have to go into more detail so we can specifically address his arguments.

I don't want individual adressing of arguments, I want books on this matter...
Anything concerning individualism vs collectivism [Or whatever, I don't know the exact english term]

The wellspring on bourgeois individualism was John Locke (1632-1704), English philosopher, author of Two Treatises of Government and other works. Portuguese translations are available; in English there are free downloads.

Well, and a answer to it? Some philosophical work by some socialist, criticizing bourgeois individualism? Is Rousseau any good? Just looked him up at the Wikipedia.

The ego and its own has no answer. Marx made an attempt to ciritque it but its was p. much an utter failure. And I'd seriously recommend reading it (its boring but not as boring as Marx).
