Obviously, none of you have a clue about Canada, other than what you saw on Conan O'Brian.
Les Quebecois have a long, sad history of being pushed around by WASP's, and that friggin' Dog puppet didn't help matters when he told them to "LEARN THE LANGUAGE."
It wasn't over-reaction. It wasn't funny. It was a blatant, insulting attack, not on one person, but a culture. That's not comedy, that's bigotry.

You must respect Conan, he even called his show's products expensive, making fun of the Conan night-light being sold for twelve dollars, mocking how it probably cost ten cents to make.

First of all, just because something is anti-French does not make it racist. French people are not a race, they are an ethnicity.
Secondly, they are not French they are Quebecois.
Thirdly, it was a completely insensitive and tacky thing to do.
Fourthly, to say that the Quebecois have been pushed around by "WASPS" for ages is bullshit. That is the classic tired ass, bullshit line that separatists like to spew, but it is not true. They were quite happy to take their orders from the Catholic church, which told them that there place in life was not to run companies or commerce but to stay lumberjacks, farmers etc.
Finally, Triumph is a blatant rip-off of Canada's own Ed the Sock. Like so many times before, Americans have to continue to rip-off Canada ad nauseum.

I do understand that being insulting and not very pc is the whole basis of the dog puppet's "humor"... I watch Conan sometimes, he can be funny, but more often I find his jokes lame.
I don't think he's a racist, and the jokes weren't intended to be. The writers obviously had no perspective of the situation, no idea of the tensions and history.
So I wouldn't call the show "racist", I think that's a bit over the top. I do however think that he was out of line with the jokes, and should admit to his mistake in being way out of the line on this one.

Precisely. It was obviously not intended to be racist. Conan and his writers obviously were ignorant of the situation in Quebec and its history and whatnot. The result was a show that was quite bigotted and not funny and Conan should appologize. That said, it wasn't 'hate-mongering' and I think some politicians are carrying it a bit too far.

I was actually watching that show (Toronto edition of Conan's Late Night) and the Canadian crowd loved him. He never got booed the entire time. Imagine the Canadian media:
Reporter: "...and tonight on the Toronto news, Conan O' Brian insults Canada and its people, he hates us, and we are extremely offended. Just ignore the Canadian crowd that cheered for Conan louder than the American ones normally do, because we really were offended on the night!"
I wouldn't call it hate-mongering (hey, Conan is god), but even with my hard left politics I know that anybody calling Conan racist is a dumbass.

It is mostly because the Quebecois are all into seperatism.
So I guess that the gov. feels that they would lose support in Quebec if they thought that they weren't standing up for them.
Although, I know that if I was French I'd probably be .

Secondly, they are not French they are Quebecois.
Don't play on words. Canadians call us French, Americans call us French Canadian, French people call us Québécois.
What makes me laugh here is that the English Canada makes such a big fuss of this issue, while the poeple here in Québec are not even talking about it.
Still, the guy's a point.
French Canadians complained all their lives about how the the rest of Canada do not respect their language, but most of them (mainly the old generations) don't bother speaking English properly.

Last night, I brought up the point of:
Les Quebecois have a long, sad history of being pushed around by WASP's
Although historically accurate, to a point, I guess I over-reacted. I was rather agitated by the ignorance shown by the people who posted before I did.
I don't hate Conan. I thought (Aside from the bit with the friggin Dog puppet), he was rather funny. The skit, where he posed as a Mountie at the border, I thought that was funny as hell! (The Testing of the Beer, and so forth).
The Segment with the Dog Puppet though, the writers could have done with a LITTLE more insight, but didn't, and the bit came off with a aura of Biggotry around it. I don't hold Conan responsable for this; it wasn't his fault. I was more shocked than insulted, actually.
I know some of you could give a rat's ass about the situation, or in the case of Mr. bubbrubb, Canada itself, but on the other hand, did you expect that the segment would be taken with apathy?

God, some people are so fucking sensitive I can't help but laugh. Yes, the jokes were ignorant of the situation, so what, it was a joke. A harmless one. I think cultural jokes are fine, to a point. I didn't think the sketch was particularly funny, but nowhere near offensive. Lighten up, for the sake of humor, lighten the fuck up. Don't laugh if you don't want, that's fine, but to make a big fuss is insane.
By the way, Conan's jokes and monologues aren't that funny, but his interviews are the best in the world. He is the funniest, most talented interviewer in the world.

On a side note, the reason Canada’s is divided the way it is, is because of t he language barrier. If a country wants to remain united there must be a common language. Mark my words, the ‘hip’ thing in the west will be Spanish soon.

Well me and Felicia were talking to her roomate about this last night, and he said that basically they think that telling Quebec to learn the language was as insensitive as they get, and basically he proves the saying on the Quebec liscense plates correct: "Je me souviens" because il se souvien. And does he ever. His main points dated back to the 'Great Patriot Revolt' (which we in Ontario call the 'lower canada rebellion of 1837' which happened aroundd the time of the 'upper canada rebellion of 1837' which gets more coverage as it happened here), and some to conquest.
He's a good guy so don't think I'm *****ing about him! He let me sleep on his couch for two nights and eat his (read: Felicia's) food!

The whole reason for the uproar goes back to Money.
Canada paid 1 million US dollars to the Conan O'Brian show. They want their money back and they are just using this as an excuse. Just like AOL and other companies used the excuse of Janet Jackson showing her breasts to try and get their money back. It is a new tactic by governments and corporations, cause a media uproar so they can get their money back for something they paid.
It is triumph the insult dog, he insults everybody and everything, that's his shtick. The word insult is built into his stage name, this really shouldn't come as any surprise to anybody that they made fun of the french sector of canada. I watch plenty of comedy and well, the french sector of Canada is a huge target. Kids in the Hall made fun of it, Montreal Comedy Festival made fun of it over and over and over and over again.
Insults are fine when you know they aren't meant to hurt but to make fun of. Watch Triumph go insult all the people dressed up and waiting for days in front of the theatre to watch Star Wars Episode II. Download here 10 megs (http://www.armydrummer.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/triumph_-_star_wars.wmv)
Comedy is just dangerous, you are trying to make people laugh and people want to laugh that is why they are watching or listening to you. When doing comedy you constantly walk on dangerous lines and searching for ways to make people laugh, sometimes it is at the expense of yourself, a friend or others. The point in the end is to make people laugh and not to make people feel bad for who they are., and the point of the people is to know that intent. Racism has a reason and if the comedy isn't using that reason then it isn't racism. I have heard racist comedy and I have heard comedy on races and their is a big difference.
Then there are just stupid people like Ted Danson who wears black face to the Fryer's club, or is in the TV show cheers.

THANK GOD ! Someone understands comedy. That was a great post EC, I agree 100%. Especially with that quote.
I still think it's amazing that you guys can miss this point so completely. He isn't making these jokes to hurt those poor French Canadians, he's doing it to make fun of stereotypes. He's doing it as A JOKE. Not to "oppress" them, not to hurt them, to make them laugh. Again, the French Canadians in the crowd laughed, why can't you guys ? Is it some kind of guilt that is ingrained in American leftists heads that makes them unable to laugh at cultural jokes ?
Also, that thing with Triumph talking to the Star Wars geeks was fucking hilarious. The guy who does that voice (Robert Smigel) is very clever to come up with those comebacks so quick. That is genius.

NBC's Conan O'Brien Issues 'Apology' to Quebec
1 hour, 49 minutes ago Add Entertainment - Reuters TV to My Yahoo!
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Late-night comedian Conan O'Brien sought to defuse a flap over a recent segment poking fun at the French-Canadian province of Quebec by issuing a self-deprecating "apology" on Tuesday in French.
Reuters Photo
"People of Quebec, I'm sorry," the host of NBC's "Late Night" show said in English, as a translator recited in French, with English subtitles, "People of Quebec, I'm an albino jackass."
"We meant no harm with our comedy piece the other night," O'Brien continued, "translated" into French as: "The other night, I wet the bed like a little girl."
"I was a stranger in a strange land and I was very insensitive," he went on, with the subtitle: "I have a small penis."
The tongue-in-cheek mea culpa was delivered by O'Brien after his usual monologue during the taping of Tuesday night's show in New York.
O'Brien sparked a burst of outrage from the Canadian government last Thursday with a segment in which a rubber hand-puppet known as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a recurring character on the show, said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." The ribald puppet told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."
The controversial segment came during O'Brien's highly publicized road trip last week for a series of shows taped in and around Toronto to help boost that city's profile in the wake of last year's deadly SARS (news - web sites) outbreak.
But members of the federal government in Ottawa said O'Brien's jokes about Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada, went too far.
Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democratic Party, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile." She demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million ($760,000) subsidy paid by Ontario, the province of which Toronto is the capital, to General Electric Co.'s NBC network to help bring O'Brien's show to Canada.

Yeah, Smigel's a genius. Too bad most lefites won't get to appreciate his comedy because, god forbid, it may have offended some people. Can you guys imagine what comedy would be like if it was unoffensive to everyone ? No Richard Pryor. No Chris Rock. No George Carlin. No SNL. No John Stewart and the Daily Show. No South Park. It would be bleak and boring if comedy was totally unoffensive. You people need to lighten up, otherwise, pad the walls, round off the corners, censor everything deemed remotely offensive and get ready for a boring ass life.

HaHa!
Yes. Exactly. I haven't read anything in this thread besides this page. However you don't goto a comedy show expecting to hear jokes about brocoli, or a chair, things that are unoffensive.
Comedy is funny because you are making fun of something.
That's the point of comedy.
Telling jokes.
Get it, a joke.
As in said as a joke.
As in not trying to be offensive, it was a joke.
This is what many people have problems with. Just laugh damn't. Or if you don't find it funny, go home. Or turn off the tv. Whatever, just don't sit and watch the whole damn thing and then complain about it later. Nobody forced you to sit and watch. It's like censorship. Come on. How far are we going to push our freedoms. Many of you probably agree with personal freedom and the fact that we should not have our freedom taken away. Well it's their freedom to make fun of Canadians. Just like its Canadians freedom to make fun of me. Go ahead.
You don't hear me in an uproar about Dave Chappelle taking stabs at white's. I'm not in an uproar over Dubya Bush because he offends me by lying.
People, I know everyone can laugh. Therefore, laugh at the jokes. Don't cry about it. For one, the dog isn't even real. That should give it away right there that the whole thing is a joke. Learn to laugh. Come on

I am telling you right now, this whole thing is coming back to money. The ruling class is looking for an excuse to get money back a refund if you will and they are purposely making people think they should be offended.
It isn't like 10,000 citizens took to the streets and protested this the next day or just flooded the NBC switch boards with complaints. A member of the political ruling class who has access to local media, told people they should be upset and the people followed. Then the uproar started, once people where told, "hey this is offensive and racist and everybody is upset" oh and by the way, "we would like out money back".
I would have loved the repsonse generated back by the citizens if the policital ruling class hadn't stepped in. I doubt that there would have been any. I am sure there would have still been a few people upset, people who couldn't take a joke, but they wouldn't have been calling their local rep to get money back from the show.
Remember ruling class politicians want to get their name and face into the media as much as possible, even if it is on a gamble like this. You might look like a moron or a hero depending how many people jump on your bandwagon.
It isn't a real hard sell for a Canadian politican in a 30 second blurb, to tell you that Americans did another thing you should be upset at. Considering how much Canadians are already a front to american aggression through out the past few years.

The South in America has to be one of the biggest butt of jokes in this whole country. Florida and Alabama alone probably make up 78.54% of all humor in this country. There is a good reason for that too, they are silly, silly people deserving of many jokes at their expense.
I bet you, if you watched Bill Hicks (the greatest stand up comedic genious ever, next to Ronald Reagan) you wouldn't be sitting there going, "Oh no, he is making fun of the Christian Moral Majority, he is going to offend them if they see this). You are going to be laughing your ass off, because 1/2 of it is true, 1/2 of it is told with superiority (excellent story telling techniques) and 1/2 of it exagerrated properly for a humorus response. I know I took too many 1/2s.

I didn't think about that EC, that's a good point. I mean, I can see people not enjoying a minority being made fun of, but to protest a joke ? To call him a racist ? It's very interesting how there is this whole money thing involved. There is no way these people would be making such an uproar about a little joke just because they were offended by it. There has to be a motivating factor.
Most people that get pissed off about this kind of thing just don't understand comedy. They don't get that alot of times people joke about these stereotypes to show how stupid those very stereotypes are. Have any of you ever heard a black comedian make fun of black people ? He isn't doing it because he hates his people, he does it because he can laugh at stereotypes. Alot of the time these kinds of jokes are partly true, and you exagerate them to get a laugh. Sometimes I think people who get upset at this kind want everyone to be the same so nobody can offend anyone else, why else would they make such a fuss when someone points out a difference in behavior ?
