Born in Wales, I spent my childhood in an old mining valley. It was a pretty rough place, plenty of poverty and all that, but I had it pretty good. Emigrated to Australia just before my teens, spent a bit of time in the public school system before going to a private school. In my experience, communism and far-left ideologies in general have always been relegated to the whole 'good on paper, bad in practice' pile.
I've always had leftist sympathies, as the exploitation of the working class is pretty entrenched in Welsh history. My parents hold leftist beliefs as well, although they don't know it. Not having any interest in politics and experiencing the Cold War firsthand has made them pretty "anti-communist".
Whilst I tend to identify with the left, I'm not very knowledgeable in the area. I have a pretty passionate interest in history and so that's where most of my political knowledge stems from. Unfortunately, political ideologies were never covered in any depth at the schools I attended. Any history teacher I had said something along the lines of, "communism = bad, fascism = bad, capitalism = good".
This is the first time that I'm approaching politics with any seriousness and also my first time on a proper forum. I'd love to hear the basics from you all.
P.S. Any reading suggestions for a beginner?
