Revisionism originally meant a breed of reformism advanced by Bernstein in early Social-Democracy. Nowadays, this tendency has become synonymous with Social-Democracy in general.

The definition has been transformed into a slur meaning 'opportunist bastardization of theory' (mostly by 'anti-revisionist' Marxist-Leninists) by comparing rightists to their Bernsteinist forebears.
