Week of Justice for Rasmea!

September 8-14

Mobilize for Cincinnati this fall and stand with Rasmea Odeh at her appeal

We are calling on you to join the Week of Justice for Rasmea Odeh between Tuesday, September 8 and Monday, September 14, 2015. We need you to organize support for this 68-year-old Palestinian women, a victim of Israeli torture and U.S. government injustice.

When Rasmea Odeh is under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!

The outrageous arrest, trial, and sentencing of Rasmea Odeh is a political attack on Arab Americans and Palestinians, on Muslims, and on anti-war and international solidarity activists. While the charges being appealed deal with minor problems on her immigration application, the truth is this is a political trial about U.S. Empire. The U.S. government is acting viciously, spending millions of tax dollars targeting a victim of Israeli military torture.

Despite the unfairness, with you we can continue to beat back this political attack, and prevent an icon of the Palestinian freedom struggle from going to prison or being deported.

Living in Chicago for 20 years now, Rasmea Odeh is surrounded by friends, family and community. For her work serving Arab American women and their families in need, she won many awards and public recognition. The U.S. government began targeting Rasmea Odeh after the FBI raids and grand jury investigation on the Antiwar 23!

Angela Davis, who recently spoke to 500 people at a Chicago rally, said in her solidarity statement, “As a person with first-hand knowledge of the devastation wrought by politically motivated prosecutions — during the era of COINTELPRO, I was falsely charged with three capital offenses — I see Rasmea Odeh’s case as a continuation of the embarrassing history of decades of suppression of social justice activists in the U.S.”

Solidarity! Solidarity! Solidarity!

Rasmea Odeh’s fight is not a one sided battle with predetermined outcomes. Solidarity makes a big difference! It was solidarity that forced Judge Borman, with financial, political and family ties to Israel, to step down from the case last year. It was solidarity that made reporters show up to cover the 200 people protests in front of the Detroit courts. It was solidarity that found out Rasmea Odeh was being held in solitary confinement and got her out again.

If you care about peace and justice, if you oppose political repression, then you need to act. If you support Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions that target the U.S. government and corporations propping up Israel Apartheid, then this is for you! You can join the Week of Justice for Rasmea and help overturn this judicial travesty by the U.S. government.

Salt Lake City breaks bread in solidarity with Rasmea Odeh

http://www.fightbacknews.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/article-lead-photo/attendees.jpg

By Cannon Atkinson

Salt Lake City, UT - Over 30 Rasmea Odeh supporters filled City Cakes, a bakery in Salt Lake City, on August 16 to raise money for Odeh’s legal defense. People came to donate and show solidarity with Rasmea Odeh, the Palestinian American women’s leader in Chicago. Odeh is preparing for an appeal that will take place in Cincinnati, Ohio later this fall.

Odeh was tortured, raped and imprisoned by the Israeli military back in the late 1960s, but lived legally in the U.S. for 20 years, 10 of them as a citizen. In an unfair trial where she was not allowed to talk about being a victim of Israeli military torture or the Israeli occupation of Palestine, she was convicted on a minor immigration violation. Odeh is the target of U.S. government political repression.

“It’s important to show folks that Salt Lake City has and will stand with Rasmea Odeh as long as this fight is going on.” said Alyssa Farris. The Utah Anti-War Committee (UAWC) raised hundreds of dollars for Rasmea Odeh’s legal defense, as she continues to fight to stay out of prison and then being deported to a country that is not her own.

“Nothing beats a packed house, especially when it’s for an important cause!” said one happy diner.

Palestinian restaurant O’ Falafel, City Cakes, and local grocers donated to the dinner. “I think it says a lot that we were able to reach out to the community and ask them to provide all of this,” said Ian Decker of UAWC.

Members of the Utah Anti-War Committee, Revolutionary Students’ Union and the Salt Lake City community brought their friends and families to break bread in solidarity with Rasmea Odeh.

The Rasmea Defense Committee contends that Judge Gershwin Drain did not allow for a full and fair trial (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=69c5de2bfa&e=266d74dd41), and believes that is why Rasmea was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison and deportation. We are confident that she has solid arguments on appeal, and wrote in late July that the "defense argues conclusively that the government 'never really addresses the basic constitutional deprivations asserted in Ms. Odeh’s opening appellate brief (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=d64c10fa44&e=266d74dd41),' and that Rasmea is 'entitled to present her complete defense to the jury,' which can only happen in a new trial."

After the oral arguments are heard by three appellate judges on October 14, a decision will be made between two and six months later. If the court agrees with the defense and overturns the conviction and the sentencing, the case gets sent back to the prosecution to possibly refile charges, whereupon the entire trial process begins anew. But this time, evidence of torture, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), etc., would be allowed into the courtroom.

If the court upholds the conviction but disagrees with the sentence, the appellate judges send new sentencing guidelines back to Drain for re-sentencing. In the worst possible scenario, her conviction and sentencing would be upheld, meaning that she would have to serve 18 months in prison and then be deported. If this happens, the defense could ask that all of the 6th Circuit appellate court judges, not just the three panelists, review the case as a last ditch effort to win the appeal.

We have been doing non-stop fundraising, organizing public events, and pitching Rasmea's story (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=0364e404f9&e=266d74dd41) to media across the country and the world.

There is still much more organizing to be done!

Rasmea Odeh speaks out against police crimes

By staff

Fight Back News Service is circulating Rasmea Odeh’s speech to the historic August 29 march in Chicago for community control of the police. Fight Back! editors urge all of our readers to come to Cincinnati, Ohio on Oct. 14, when arguments on the appeal of her unjust conviction are heard in federal court. For more information go to Stopfbi.net.

http://www.fightbacknews.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/article-lead-photo/RasmeaChi.jpg

Stop police crimes

It is incredibly powerful to see all these thousands gathered here to raise our voices to stop police crimes, to demand a Civilian Police Accountability Council, and to continue to fight for justice, because we all have the same hopes and dreams, and believe in the same principles of freedom, justice and equality.

We Palestinians have been struggling for close to 70 years under Israel’s illegal colonial military occupation and its oppressive and racist practices. They continue to terrorize our people and commit brutal crimes. So we know the anger, the outrage and the motivation to rise up against racist law enforcement policies that push our communities to the margins of humanity.

The police crimes against Black people in the U.S. are almost identical to what we experience in Palestine from the Israelis. This is why we talk about joint struggle, why our responsibility is to support the struggles of those oppressed in this country, in Palestine, and all over the world. We Palestinians and Arabs stand in unqualified solidarity with brave Black community members like all of you, who are rising up against every instance of vicious police violence in this country.

In addition, we demand police accountability and an end to racial profiling. That is why we are here as endorsers of the campaign to establish a Civilian Police Accountability Council, why we are supporting We Charge Genocide’s challenge to the ‘Stop and Frisk’ policies of the Chicago Police Department, and why my organization, the Arab American Action Network, has launched a youth-led campaign to stop repression and racial profiling against Arabs and Muslims as well.

I believe our challenges are tough. Deconstructing racism and national oppression is not easy. Stopping police crimes will not be a simple task. But we should not be frightened by the challenges, and as long as we believe in our rights and the principles that we stand for, and rise up together, we become stronger and more effective. Then we can achieve our goals and beyond.

We stand for social justice and liberation in this country, the same way my people have dedicated their lives to the liberation of Palestine. The struggle of the Black Liberation movement in this country, and anti-colonial struggles in Africa, Latin America, and Asia have always been an inspiration to us. We continue to find inspiration and strength from those struggles and today’s, and we recognize that Black Liberation in this country will lead to liberation for all.

Lastly, I want to say that I’m very proud to see that most of this crowd is young people. You are leading and providing fresh air that our communities need to breathe. Combine your resources with the wisdom of the older generation; with the experiences of your allies; and with other communities to ensure that you achieve the dreams and goals that belong to you and to all of us. Keep organizing today and every day until we achieve a Civilian Police Accountability Council. I know we will achieve this goal together!

Thank you all.
