You can pick a side right now by supporting the Which Side Are You On?/Rise Up October Tour, organizing many thousands in the eastern part of the U.S. to get to New York City October 24.
Seasoned leaders of the struggle, young people and others new to the struggle, and loved ones of people murdered by police are bringing the reality of police terror to religious congregations, campuses, unions, libraries and mainstream and alternative media.
We're asking you to fund transportation & food for the volunteers (https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1438359385-96674c759da7162f99c1065dad1af96b-0667e87?pa=32047562199) willing to take off work, leave home, and step out to organize many thousands of others. As the killings of Black people by police continued to mount – Sandra Bland in Texas, Sam DuBose in Cincinnati, Ralkina Jones in Cleveland and others - the #RiseUpOctober National Tour hit Cleveland.
On July 22, #RiseUpOctober held a press conference featuring Carl Dix, the co-initiator with Cornel West of the Call for the National March in NYC on October 24; Mertilla Jones, grandmother of Aiyana Stanley-Jones who was killed by a Detroit cop in 2010; Brenda Bickerstaff, sister of Craig Lamont Bickerstaff who was killed by police in Cleveland in 2002; Joshua Lopez, nephew of John Collado who was killed by the NYPD in 2012, and Dante Boykin of the Cleveland area Coalition Against Injustice.
Our message – that police murder was unacceptable and must be stopped and that we plan a huge march aimed at STOPPING it for New York City on October 24 – was carried on mid day news casts on several local network affiliates, radio stations and in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1438359385-ca2886301d04a6504976d697bb42653c-0667e87?pa=32047562199), the main daily newspaper. For the next couple of days, we met people in Cleveland who saw us on TV.
