I'm trying to look at more case studies of nations that have had a socialist political element to them. I hear a lot about countries in Latin American such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba etc. but I have not read much about their history and the development of socialist and/or nominally Marxist-Leninist states.

I also understand there is an anti-imperialist movement in Syria and after more research I discovered socialist parties play a prominent role in their politics. However I have absolutely no idea as to how that is.

It would be much appreciated if anyone could lend me some literature that go in-depth on the history / political development of these countries, esp. told from a leftist stand point. America made Venezuela a "threat to national security" or something like that for God's sake.

I would read Latin America's Turbulent Transitions: The Future of 21st Century Socialism. It's coherent and explains Bolivia, Venezuela, Cuba and Ecuador from a left perspective.
