On CBC radio this morning, there was some call-in thing about a non-profit helping Syrian refugees. One caller gave an awesome little speech about how such organizations were burdened with picking up the slack thanks to the xenophobic government's treatment of refugees. That made me smile, but the host kept interjecting with thinly-veiled half-assed apologetics for the government. Not that they were ever anything but bourgeois media, but those funding cuts and scandals really seem to have the CBC intimidated into a new level of passivity.
On another note, I finally finished the Starcraft II campaign mode last night after switching from "Normal" to "casual" difficulty. I am seriously terrible at that game.

I have often wondered whether preparing tofu, falafel, and so forth constitutes cultural appropriation considering that I am white and have no cultural or ethnic connection to any of those foods. Would it only constitute appropriation if I opened a restaurant and sold falafel despite not being Arab, etc.?

The food you get at your Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Greek, or Thai restaurant was very likely prepared by a Latino cook. 80 percent of Japanese restaurants are owned by Koreans, my restaurant is owned by a Jew, I know a few owned by Armenian, and most are managed by non-Asians. Somehow I don't think Atsumari would profit even if "her people" were selling food from "her" culture. I remember that, years ago, a small Croatian restaurant (!!!) opened in Tokyo - it was called Doburo or something like that. It was owned by Japanese people. I didn't receive any money from it. If it had been instead owned by Croats... I still wouldn't have received anything. The existence of that restaurant didn't affect me in any way. Well, alright, the image of someone from Dalmatia as wearing a striped shirt and jaunty beret did make me laugh, so there's that.
Also good grief, if we're going to keep cuisine pure and free from influence of devious foreigners the Japanese can kiss some of their most popular food goodbye. In fact most of us can go back to chewing roots and boiling grains into a mush.

Then what exactly does constitute cultural appropriation? I always had the impression that it meant people from a privileged group borrowing cultural elements from less privileged groups and especially profiting off those elements. Thus quite often I hear white people wearing dreadlocks or Japanese fashions, twerking, and so forth as racist cultural appropriation.

So you would say that food differs from fashion or music in a way that makes cultural appropriation inapplicable? Thus a white designer using Japanese influences or a white musician rapping is engaging in cultural appropriation, but a white restaurateur making falafel is not?

You can hear all sorts of nonsensical things on the Internet. "Cultural appropriation" is one of those things. It's a "struggle" carried out by a section of the petite bourgeoisie with "ethnic" roots, who want exclusive rights to "their" culture.
Um as a white person I am very pissed at Japan appropriating lolita culture from all of us white people. And who does this Kurosawa guy think he is ripping off Shakespeare?

Also, the Japanese sort of appropriated metalworking from the Koreans, literacy from the Chinese, and so on... not that this is unusual. If "my people" hadn't appropriated left and right I would probably be riding a horse through the steppes today. I believe that it should be taken on a case by case basis. Using the music example, would I be allowed to play metal? Metal was invented by a white person and only half of me is white so would it be "cultural appropriation" for me to join a metal band?
As for food being different, I see it that way. When you live in a country like America where a shitload of cultures shit all over each other, shit happens.

Cultural appropriation refers to someone from a privileged culture borrowing elements of an oppressed culture, so a person of color playing heavy metal would not constitute it. On the other hand, I have often seen white rappers accused of cultural appropriation because they are using a genre created by another culture living under white oppression.
Regarding the question of food, I ask because I have always wondered how a white person like me is supposed to go vegetarian/vegan when traditional European cuisine relies so heavily on meat and other animal products. I have long worried that switching to tofu, falafel, and so forth constitutes cultural appropriation.

I really don't think that eating certain kinds of food is cultural appropriation. It's not like you're taking recipes from other cultures, passing them off as your own and making lots of money. You're just eating delicious food which is widely available to everyone. I guess if you feel bad, you could always buy tofu from a Chinese supermarket and boost their business (plus it will be cheaper).

I like people so much I want as many of them around me as possible. Individuals, that depends. I get along with some of them just fine. Others, I prefer to keep at arm's length. A city enables you to do that more than a small community does, and I have lived in several. I also don't like the thought of depending on the personal approval of various people, for obvious reasons, and of people poking around in my affairs even though I don't care for them, again, both things that happen in cities today, but much less than in small communities.

It only applies to white people now? Does being mixed change the issue? Like by this logic, am I allowed to do anything Indian? Or does having a white father make it cultural appropriation for me to do anything other than what white people do?
Are you looking for some kind of permission? lol
if that's what you want, my Indian half gives you permission to eat Indian food. You can now walk into any Indian restaurant and order anything off the menu!:laugh::laugh:
In all seriousness, as long as you aren't saying "oh yeah my people invented this" when they really didn't, I do not see an issue with cooking food from another culture.
Besides biological survival, there is only one law: Feed their ego.
As long as you're feeding their ego, just about anything is permitted. Doesn't just apply to cultural issues, but all sorts of other issues, from relationships to military service. Some generals are so good at this that they can even get you to sacrifice your life for them.

Hey, people sometimes... time out, for lack of a better term. Personally, I'm infamous for that, in that I tend to reply to email/PM very, very late. Some people probably think I'm dead, and given how hot it is, I sort of wish they were right.

Here's my assholish advice.
Give them some time. If they don't reply back in a few more days, send them something asking if they are okay. Don't do it like in a desperate way but in a way like "hey i haven't talked to you in a while so i figured I'd see what was up. Is everything okay with you" (don't quote me exactly. i have the romantic skills of a dead animal)
If they don't respond and they are okay (IE alive and not too sick) then you should probably just move on and see what happens in the future.
As for something being wrong with you, I doubt it. I don't know you and I'm no doctor but it just seems to be a little anxiety. You want to impress this person so when they stop responding to you, you freak out thinking you did the opposite. (there may be more to it but as for that action in itself, you are probably okay and just anxious about it)

I know they won't approve - they're G1 immigrants from India, very protective and quite backward when it comes to things like this. I need to finish secondary/high school before I'm allowed to date, and right now I'm starting my GCSE courses so they'd call any romantic anything a distraction. Besides, this guy is older and my parents don't know him directly (we met at an extra-curricular politics thing) so...
Unfortunately not, and part of the reason why I'm so obsessed with this guy is that I can't find anyone else to distract me. I know for a fact that there are people who like me, but I don't like anyone back because my bar has been raised so high because the guy I like appears to be exactly my type.

Today I had the all important "which critter to sacrifice during the different phases of the moon cycle" with my fiancee....because tonight is blue moon.
I have learned that hamsters make for a poor sacrifice and they are much better suited for potions and cremes (seriously...don't ask). That you use rats during the Sabbath to divine the potential future...but...it would be better to use birds and fish on non Sabbath days. Rabbits and chickens are the best (also because you can apparently eat them after you used them). But goats and sheep are to be considered life sacrifices that you only use in the most dire of circumstances when all other magic has failed. You also...and I quote... "don't generally" sacrifice humans.
....She is not getting a kitten for her birthday
My first big crush was in elementary school. She was smart and pretty - she wasn't the smartest and probably not the prettiest either, but nobody else really left much of an impression on me to remember if they were prettier or not. She stood up for kids who were bullied. That's probably what I admired most about her. In middle school, we were supposed to pick an instrument to study. When I found out she picked the flute, I decided to pick the flute too. We ended up in the same class, which is exactly what I wanted. But shortly after the school year started, my family moved to a different state, and I never saw her again.
In high school, I was "in love" with another girl that was smart and pretty. At least I could remember enough about other girls in my class to know she wasn't the prettiest, but there was nobody else I respected as much in terms of her grades (?) ...or maybe it was just the way she carried herself. I would get lost staring into her eyes. She had a boyfriend though, and I considered her out of my league.
Looking back on it now, I doubt any relationship with them would have worked out in the end. Not that I think they had any invisible character flaws, but best plausible case scenario would be that they would have just evolved into mutual-admiration friendships.

Today I had the all important "which critter to sacrifice during the different phases of the moon cycle" with my fiancee....because tonight is blue moon.
Actually animal sacrifices were part of the old covenant which was rendered outdated when God sacrificed his only son for the sins of man. Thus the only sacrifice you should be taking part in is the consumption of the bread and wine at mass (which through sacrament are trasubstantiated into the body and blood of Jesus).

I had a literature professor (British modernism) who was an extreme right-wing Catholic with borderline fascist opinions (though, strangely, outspokenly anti-homophobic). He was convinced that TS Eliot, Virginia Woolf and others were arguing, in their works, in favor of bringing back human sacrifice. He seemed to be in favor of this position himself.
Only in academia, folks...

My parents were sorta like that when I was growing up although not as strict. Basically they wanted me to focus on getting an education instead of getting girls. Well my 15 year old self fell in love with a 22 year old girl. I tried to sneak her into my house one night after my parents were asleep and holy shit I thought they were going to kill me. It took a shitload of convincing to calm them down and not call the police. (I lied and said she was 16 but they knew it was bullshit)
Before anyone says anything, she wasn't a pedo. I was mature enough to make that choice on my own..although not mature enough to not get busted apparently haha.

Oh my gosh...if my parents suspected that I'd been fucking someone, I would be on the streets. I'm not even kidding.
I hate the whole "studies first," thing. It's not as though being in a relationship is going to affect your studies any more than crushing on someone who you can't be with.
After you graduate and get a job, all they'll talk about is when you'll get married and have kids. It would be so ironic, except that the time difference makes the joke too long to be funny.

Holy shit lol
After that I basically told them that I was going to do what i want anyway so they got off my back about it as long as "I agreed to let them meet the person first and didn't have sex"
I had sex anyway and they hated every person I was with so I just kept that stuff secret and told them I was single after a while.
Trust me, I would have made a LOT better grades and stuff if I would not have had to hide so much from EVERYONE. (If one person found out, I would panic thinking my parents would find out)

Believe it or not, they use stuff like that to gauge public reception of their political positions. The more veiled threats they hear, the more likely they will backpedal their pronouncements. Usually in the media, say something like "Bowing to public outrage / backlash against so and so..." and don't actually say the words "veiled threats" but it is always a contributing factor to their measurements.

To all the people defending nuking Japanese people today, what if we executed every surviving American involved in the mission to nuke Japan, and also executed their families, and their descendants since 1945? Many would be horrified and say, "WTF? You want to kill kids who had nothing to do with the bombing?"
So innocent American lives deserve our sympathy, but innocent Japanese people don't, because they're not really people, right?
When the anti-Japanese propaganda was green-lighted in the US, it was for political and military expediency. They wanted support for the war effort, and manufacturing hatred was one way to do it. It was so successful that those who approved the dehumanization project were caught up in their own propaganda, and began to see the Japanese as subhuman as well. Today the same approval of atrocities against Muslims can be seen in the West, because the media campaign against Muslims has been in effect for a long time.

And that matters because?is there an age limit on intelligence now? I understand that most of us are young however I don't think being past 25 or whatever bars you from leftist politics. I know a leftist that is turning 42 next month. Most popular leftist writers also continued to write about leftist politics even when they were not exactly young. (Look at Marx for example. )
Most leftist politicians were also in their 30's and 40's when they took power.
If you are worried about looking creepy at protests and stuff, no one should care. The protests are about the topic they are protesting, not the age of the people that attend. If anyone takes issue, they are probably there for the wrong reasons. (IE to look cool)

the radical left tends to be a movement for the young, stereotypically associated with college students, punk rockers, etc. When you're young, your future is open. You do not live a life of security, but you also do not live a life of dependency. You think you can keep your integrity forever, but when you're old and actually in a position to leak government documents, you begin to behave like a battered spouse - reminded me of this from someone who isn't even suffering from domestic violence:
How do you break free of it though? I've got a wicked case of it right now with my current relationship. I've been questioning it for 3 years and am terrified to keep going round the same circles but im even more terrified of breaking free and trying to piece together a life alone.
I'm more scared of the practical side of things. Moving out and finding some place new and what about my furniture and my cat and can I even afford to live alone. We work together and I love my job but how fucking awkward would that be?? I have no family within 4000 miles and I don't have any friends i could stay with either. I am afraid to leave him and have nothing left.

The old ways of building credibility are fading with the internet. It used to be an adage among politicians that "You are no better than your credibility" and candidates would spend years carefully crafting their image, shaking hands and kissing babies, each bit of credibility they add to their name contributing to their future ability to use association fallacy to get their bad ideas implemented. When society is structured like a pyramid, people want to be sure those above them are trustworthy.
This is already starting to fade with the internet, and years spent on crafting credibility and honing reputation in the future will become more and more a waste of time. Those who are successful will be the ones who are good at packing all the good stuff into one idea bomb. With ideas coming from all directions and distances in the network, people will spend less and less time checking your credentials, and more and more time on the idea itself, before quickly moving on to the next idea. Even identity itself is becoming less permanent - people flit between accounts - or post completely anonymously. The old political tactics dealing with credibility and reputation are fading as well - character assassination doesn't work on those who change accounts or are anonymous - trying to paint Jewish or Chinese people as sneaky isn't going to work if the politician you're trying to target is always a faceless 4chan or reddit commentator.
If Paul has a close friend who has good ideas, he might often share those ideas with his twitter or youtube following. But if one day he decides Jesus is off his rocker about some topic, he might instead add in some points from his new acquaintance Muhammad. But what do Paul's followers do with Paul's ideas? They treat them like Paul treats the ideas of Jesus and Muhammad - to them, they are all just random internet inputs - some they disregard, some they take to heart, some they forget, some they won't remember until years later - and it's on to the next twitter or youtube posting from some other random prophet.

Poachers are douchebags and everything, but as someone pointed out to me, how many of the people so angry over this consumed a bunch of nameless animals so far this year? Are there not people even more deserving of scorn who aren't getting it on the same level?
Also, sadly, the poacher is right about one thing: There are plenty of 'causes of the week' which flare up and fade away as soon as the media and their capitalist masters deem that appropriate.

^ The fact that people are outraged shows that people are progressing when it comes to the issue of animal rights. It definitely is hypocritical to denounce hunting whilst biting into a hamburger, but I think those who condemn these acts the most passionately are the ones who are capable of shedding that hypocritical lifestyle and living more morally consistent lives.

Absolutely. I should clarify that I'm not trying to excuse "trophy hunting". That was just something that was said to me, and even if there were no difference, that perceived hypocrisy would not excuse poaching anyway. That was just my knee-jerk reaction to the 'selective outrage', but when I stop and think, yeah, it's not that the outrage is without merit (far from it).

I don't really like hunting either. It's boring. I prefer more of the "crime of opportunity" aspect of killing helpless woodland creatures.
Eh, I haven't even killed that much. A few deer, a few rabbits, some ducks, one squirrel. I ate all of them, though, with the exception of the squirrel. Been a while since I got back in touch with my hick roots...TOO LONG

In the distant past, the lack of technology limited the amount of information people could get. As a result, it was very difficult to hear about people beyond your immediate vicinity. Thus very few people were famous. You might know the name of a religious figure, and possibly the name of your king, but very few others had an impact on your life. If your king was replaced, you might not know for weeks, maybe even never.
As technology improved, it was easier to get information about outside your immediate area. More people got famous, but because there were more of them, each took up less mindshare among those who knew about them. It became more difficult to become God-King because people didn't obsess as much about a single person anymore.
In the internet age, it is now very easy for millions of people to hear about a great many other people, but it is getting much more difficult for individuals to dominate mindshare like they did in the past. For people who dream of being happy when they are famous like their legendary idols, they will be disappointed. If they can't figure out other ways to be happy, then they will be in for unfulfilled lives.

Really though, fuck hunters, the sadistic flannels of shit.
I actually completely disagree with this. What is 'outrage'? Tweets? Protests? Rights? Liking pages? Meme's? Didn't these animals have rights but were poached anyways? I also think the people most passionate about these things usually have something invested in it to begin with i.e. organizations of varying stripes that tend to rally and campaign which of course benefits the organization more than anything else. Conservation is complete shit.

Holy dicks! Illuminate changed their name and you took their old avatar. I was so confused.
Anyways. I had to get a new fucking phone because my old one was getting terrible with the memory. Like deleting all my texts and an app to be able to receive/send texts. I even tried rooting it and tried hacking it to trick it into using my SD as RAM. Didn't work, and I ended up with even less memory. Couldn't recover skype, and talk to my skype homies on the go. Also lost flixter and yelp. I didn't even bother re-downloading taptalk, to inconsistent. Oh yeah, lost cracked too. Also every time I opened up the app it would stretch the memory. I got a phone with internal memory. Used and cheap off ebay. Also a fancy new MP3, being my old phone. So I can save the other off-brand phone I've been using for such. More than 16 Gigs of mostly Mexican and Colombian music. I was just moving my old collection of rap on there, for normal people to hear, when I found out I stretched the SD. Got a new one though, cheap too. I'll move it to my old phone, and hopefully have a faster interface. yeeeee

In a few interactions that I have seen with Stalinists and non-Stalinists, many Stalinists don't like to be called "Stalinists" and instead prefer to be called "Marxist-Leninists". We Trotskyists are perfectly fine using the name of Trotsky to specify what our beliefs are. Stalinists should be the same way about it. Both Stalinists and Trotskyists claim to adhere to Marx and Lenin, so it makes sense to use "Stalinist" instead of "Marxist-Leninist". It is a more accurate term to describe their tendency and it is also fair to all non-Stalinist Leninists. It'd be just as absurd if, say, Trotskyists identified their tendency as merely "Marxism". I would, of course, agree Trotskyism is a tendency of Marxism, but trying to monopolize this term for ourselves would be a dishonest way to try to delegitimize our political opponents that also identify as Marxists. If Stalin is worth standing behind, don't be afraid to stand behind him openly.

This 22 year-old's time in the 4000m pursuit went from 5:26 down to about 5:00 (in one day). I don't even understand how that's possible, and he's now about 8 seconds away from a track record. I was double checking my math, being like, am I massively fucking this up, or is this kid just suddenly faster than I ever was?
I still don't even understand where it came from - he's been sort of an average racer all year, and somehow he pulled out faster times than everyone else at the track, except for maybe a couple people.
Anyway, this is late in the season, we're just getting some specific practice in a technically difficult event (pacing is harder than it seems) before he goes to race at the Canadian National Championships. With some hard work over the winter, we can be pretty ambitious for next year. I'm pretty excited, for the first time in a while.

Eventually you get to a part in life when everything you will experience is pretty much just a variation of something you've already experienced. That's just part of getting older I guess. I'm 26 too. If I died today I'd be somewhat satisfied with how my life turned out, there's not really much that I haven't done that I have a burning desire to accomplish. I know quite a few old folks (like my parents) who still get a lot of pleasure out of just doing basic things, though, and that keeps me from feeling too sorry for myself.

Was thinking about Machiavelli's opinions about fear and love the other day. Seems fear can get you immediate obedience, but is actually what people resort to when they are unable to achieve love. What makes love more powerful? Not only do they do what you want, but they also try to figure out other things you might want and do it without you asking for it, or even without you knowing you actually wanted it in the first place. Fear, on the other hand - well, there was a long period in Rome, where basically all emperors got in power by killing the previous emperor...

It's also less expensive, it's like 3.99 for 10 pieces and they often have coupons for $1 off. Since I quit smoking I have more energy and spend less on nicotine since the gum lasts longer and is less of a physical habit. I am also sick a lot less and it usually doesn't last very long when I am. Although my main reason for posting in the thread is to say that I've been really sick for over a week. I thought it was a cold but now I'm thinking it was the flu even though I never got a high fever that I was aware of. Still have a cough and sinus congestion but it is that flu sinus congestion feeling.

You know those experiments where they take the average of everybody's face, and it's basically the face of an attractive person? I guess the theory is that internally, everyone averages all the faces they see, and use that to determine what a "normal" person looks like, and that's defined as attractive - if you're not "normal" then you're weird looking.
So what happens if you're some old, ugly, wrinkled guy who wants to be considered attractive? Take control of as much visual media as you can, and put both your face, and people who look like you, everywhere. This skews the averaging process people do in their heads. The more people read your magazines or watching your TV shows, the more your face becomes the standard of "normality" in their minds. For people who consume no visual media, they'll be mostly immune since they will be averaging the people they see in their daily lives.
Kind of interesting is what happens when cultures clash? You might come from a culture where your face and body type has been plastered all over the visual media, so you are considered attractive in your culture, and you show up in some remote location, where they have an entirely different standard of beauty. What will they think of you? I would say that even though your visual stature may have no power there, you may still carry with you the air of someone who is used to people being attracted to you. So you already walk, talk, and act like someone that is used to people thinking you're attractive. How does this affect people in a different culture? If their version of attractive people also display many of the behaviors you do, then Pavlovian conditioning may result in those people feeling an unexplained attraction to you too.

The salt mines have been tearing my body up, consider yourself lucky. The pain in my lower back/spine is pretty bad whenever I'm bent over (which is often, because I'm always hunched over a net). My legs are frequently numb and cramped and spasm. This season has really messed me up. But the good news is that it'll be over in about a week, then I'm off for another eight months or so.
Plus there is something about physical labor that is somewhat satisfying. I kick back at the end of the day, take a couple pulls out of a bottle of vodka & smoke some weed and think I accomplished some shit today...it wasn't easy but I did it!

I probably had one of the most irritating customer service moments of my life last night. If there's one thing I can't stand it's when these fucks try getting free food out of people by blaming the people who work there. I don't give a shit if you want free stuff, if you ask me for a water cup I'll give you a soda cup and you can do whatever the fuck you want. During the graveyard shift there are no managers there, just two of us workers.
This lady comes through the drive thru ordering a simple sandwich and instantly she is taking it out of the bag to check on it. Already I know she's going to be an annoying prick. So she calls me over to the window and starts whining about how one of the pieces of meat on her sandwich is too thick. Okay, I'm going to do whatever to get her out of here as quick as possible so I tell her that I'm sorry and that I can have it remade. Nope, that's not good enough for her. She DEMANDS me to bring the cook over, hand him the piece of meat that is too thick for her, discipline him in some sort of fashion, and have him apologize to her. What the actual fuck, obviously I refused to do this, I'm not going to humiliate my coworker in front of a customer like that, I don't know what weird fucking enjoyment she gets out of this. Then she gets mad I won't do this so she starts asking for free food. "You're not even going to give me something for free, like a milkshake or a fry?" The standard thing to do was to give them something for free but fuck that, there was no way in hell I'd give her anything, I told her all I would do is remake her sandwich. She tells me one more time to bring over the cook to apologize and I said no so she starts yelling at me that I'm a pussy. Just starts yelling into the window how we're both fucking pussies so I close the window on her and walk away.
My boss was then mad at me because I didn't give anything to her for free! Not surprising she takes the "let the customer trample on your spirit," stance. Most people complain about working with customers, I don't think it's that terrible though. Most of the people I interact with just want a sandwich and some fries and they're on their way but it's these other customers that make me hope there's a fire that burns down that whole area.

I didn't have many friends in high school so I hung out with this other kid who didn't have many friends either. He was a bit conceited, which may have been one of the reasons he didn't have friends. I could tolerate a lot then - I guess I had to. I lost touch with him after high school.
Anyway, the thing that sticks in my mind about him was that he was Dungeon Master of a long D&D campaign we were in. I think I was a Lawful Neutral cleric or something - not exactly an anarchist yet ;) At the end of the campaign, he wanted to kill off all our munchkin characters, so he set up this impossible battle with a beholder. We all died, but his favorite NPC escaped - an illusionist gnome I think - usually helpful to our party, but kind of mischievous. I guess I still imagine that rascal running around out there somewhere. Perhaps the wisest thing he taught me was that so much of our game world was an illusion, and to constantly repeat the phrase, "I disbelieve!" ...especially when those unavoidable magic missiles were coming at you

I just finished up a 5am breakfast sandwich only to find out that I forgot to pick-up gum when I got it. Oh well. Hopefully this rockstar can freshen up my breath.
