I agree with what this guy says - Newton was referring to the advances made prior to his discoveries.
Maybe he was describing an acid trip.

Koepler, Descartes, Copernicus, Galileo, Tycho "Silver Nose" Brahe, and many others made Newton's work possible and made the atmosphere in which he presented his work very tolerant.


I reccomend you read Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, PS. One of the more influential and important works of the past 25 years.

Newton was obsessed with the Bible and thought he was close to cracking the "Bible Code" maybe he was reffering to that.
