AFAIK It's a commonly held idea among leftists that democracy in a capitalist society is subject to state pressures and designed/instituted in a coercive manner that favors a ruling elite, thus resulting in a "fake" or "sham" democracy that does not properly represent the masses, or something of that sort. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I would really like to get a stronger theoretical basis on this issue, so if anyone can recommend any online readings that explain in-depth the inherent incompatibilities of capitalism and democracy, that would be lovely!

Both aren't really ideologies, but systems. And they are compatible. Bourgeois democracy is compatible with a bourgeois economic system. The question should be, what specifically makes a state or a democracy bourgeois? There is an inherent threat of a proletarian majority, that may make democracy retreat, but the proletariat hasn't been in that position in, well, ever.
