If Che were alive today, what do you think he would do or say about Castro. I've heard from a few people that Che would be outraged at him, others say he'd be happy about his leadership. What do you all think?

i believe he wouldn't be quite delighted. che was a true idealist and his dream isn't really achived.
i think he would still try hard to make cuba a better place according to his views and try to spread revolucion and his ideas/views. at least this is the way i see it.

i think che wouldnt be happy, but since Cuba isnt a true workers democracy then Che couldnt do nothing about him other than play dirty tactics on him, which i doubt he would do.

I think Che would be be very surprised to see how much Cuba has changed from the 60s. However, I think he would be shocked about the collapse of socialism in many other countries.

And why do you think Fidel would allow che to run cuba.
Fidel Castro
14th February 2004, 23:20
I disagree that Che would be unhappy at the way Cuba is being run today, I think that he would criticise Fidel where he felt it was neccessary, and also recognise the positives of Castro's Cuba. Che would just be Che, I think if he were still alive he would still be friendly with Fidel, and more than likely still be jetting off into some unknown land spreading revolution and social justice.

I wonder, how would he react/handle that Elian Gonzales Situation, a while back?
What would he have done to protest the situation? Has anyone ever wondered that?
Also, what would he do to combat the FTAA?

Man i love che and believe he was one of the bravest men ever, but i would not like him running cuba, he would make it an authoritarian stalinist state like raul wants too!!!
in Cuba today there is democracy and a very high level of freedom to criticize. Che did not agree with this idea, he bleieved all capitalist and 'defeatist" ideas should be surpressed. che was also kind of homophobic. Che also had a pretty short temper, a little "loco" if you know what I mean :D
overall I think Che would agree with most of cuba's policies except for the ones I listed.

Castro wouldnt allow Che to take power, he'd let him be his 'right-hand man' so to speak...
If Che were still alive, I think he'd have major influences on other nations thinking of going into socialism/communism. I.e. - Latin America and places in Africa.
I think America's thought of international democracy would be weaker, and that Che would be a greater threat towards this.
There'd probably be another war against Cuba by the Americans, because of this.

I really don't believe people are glorifying Che so much. None of Che's Revolutions amounted to very much. He was brave, but reckless. Che Guevara would have made little or no difference. It has to be said.

I think Che was changing back to being more compassionate and I agree with Knowledge that he would continue in international actions, I also believe there would be many more attempts on his life and do not know if Castro would have supported him perhaps due to that fool Raul.
I do believe if he did survive he would have aided Allende he had great love for Chile, I believe right now he would be supporting Venezula standing up for Iraq and backing many of Castro's decisions on such things. But he might push for elections in Cuba, and disagree with some of Castro's tactics. I think Che would have mellowed more than Castro in a gentler more loving fashion, I think he would have many friends around the world and being Communist would not be as much of an issue as it is now in the 1st world that we must use false names to protect ourselves on this website.
I think he would be helping Hugo Chavez right now, and helping left wing debates in the United States due to his popularity. I think things at the end of the 60's and 70's would be very different if he, Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. had lived. This is why they were killed. But as long as we remember their words they are still alive, to quote MLK, "If I can help somebody with a word then my living will not be in vain."

If Che were alive today, Cuba would not be in the economic crisis it has been in recently, as he would have developed industry and agriculture instead of having Cuba rely solely on the exportation of sugar. He and Fidel were good friends, if Che were alive today, they still would be.

If Che were alive today and returned to Cuba he would probably start a revolution. Whatever happened to Che’s Land Reform programme? Today only 20% of farmers own there own land, the rest is owned by the State who dictate to them what they must grow. However 20% of farmers produce 40% of the country’s produce, i.e. higher productivity than the state-owned farms. I have read books on Cuba with the intension of travelling there, however, I am always left feeling this isn’t the Cuba Che helped to fight for. Also, the segregation of Tourists and Cubans is another big issue which I do not feel Che would be very happy about.

What I have read contradicts the idea that Che would be in Cuba at this point. He was homesick.
Che would be running Argentina
This was the plan since he did his diplomatic mission through India and Japan, at that point he decided being a minster for Cuba was not for him and began moving towards liberating Argentina discussing invasion from the altoplano. He always felt he could do a better job than Peron.
It seems the last years of his life were built towards this. he didn't really fit in to the Cuban way of life, and missed his native Argentina. He was in many ways an exile.
I think particularly with the economic collapse recently he would be running Cuba. In fact with his presence it would have happened sooner, only instead of being lost the Argentines would have had a real leader to rally behind.
If Che could have seen rich and poor rallying in the streets breaking atms as they were a few years ago he would have been overjoyed.

You appear to have a sound knowledge of "our" beloved Che. But I qualm very much that he would be administrating Cuba at the present…to put is simply- he just was not up to the standard.
He never was while he was Director of the National bank or Minster of Industry, he failed desolately at both…therefore I am dubious, and rightly so, that he could not have mangered, effectively, the constantly besieged Cuba.

I know you must be kidding! You are saying Che would have helped the man who overthrew Chile's Marxist govenment to put in a military dictatorship and sent people to concentration camps. After Che died only a few of his men escaped back to Cuba and they did so because they were given asylum by Salvador Allende. If Che had lived he would have been with them.
Pinochet was put on power by CIA help from the Americans, anyways if che was alove today , things will be a lot different, he would probably would keep on going with his World Revolution , pump up all the Third world countries to Socialism or something close to that ( i think this is a great idea and inevitable too )

I believe Pandora is right about Che’s attitude towards his home Country, although I do not feel he would have been running Argentina, for the reasons that Essential Insignificance states. It was rather ironic that the Director of the National Bank was someone with no regard for money. Che mentions in his Bolivian Diary that he was sending some of his comrades (including Bustos the traitor) to Argentina, which was going to be his next place for starting a revolution.
Don’t you think it seems strange that all this seemed to have stopped when Che was murdered - nobody was carrying on his dream of revolutionising the so-called Tricontinents (South America, Africa and Asia). Fidel was funding the campaigns of Bolivia and Congo, but why did he stop? Why weren’t the Cubans continuing to be trained and spreading the great revolutionary plan of Guevara’s. Which goes back round the question of what would the world be like today if Che was still alive. Put it this way, he certainly wasn’t wrong about “Yankee Imperialism”.

Please forgive me Salvador Allende, it was late and I didn't proof what I wrote and wrote the opposite of what I intended, I had wondered if I had wrote Pinochet's name where I should have wrote Allende's, but decided that was foolish and didn't double check, now I know otherwise, I have re-edited my comments, thank you for catching that, a really stupid error, confounding, will be more careful. Thanks for catching that as it was not my view. [No more late night] I'm an EEDDIOOTT!!
I am also interested, Ponderosa, as to why the dream died in a sense; although it didn't if you look to Ortega in Nicaraqua, but Cuban aid seems to have dimenished in Latin Amer. Perhaps Castro was heart broken to lose such a good comrade and was tired of throwing his revolutionaries to a world not ready for change, Castro did go himself to help teach in Trinadad, people there say they were taught by him directly.
Or maybe the Soviets tied Cubas hands, and now they are economically unable to do much. Hard to say, many of those who had been involved in Guatemala with Che though went on to greater prominence, also I've heard rumors [Spanish traveler through South Africa told me peole had told him stories of Cuban presence] of Cuban involvement in South Africa during Aparteid, does anyone know more of this.

But Che's Land reform programme was all about the nationalization of Cubas farms and bring them all into common-ownership.
I agree with you about the tourist - citizen segregation however. I dont think che would have allowed a tourist industy to corrupt cuba as it has done.

When Afghanastan, Iraq Bombed the world trade center they were pretty much saying " Keep the hell outta our country" or" Stop taking or oil" And so now when america had to go and fight back instead of nogotaiate, the other country is trying to defned themeseleves which makes them look like the criminal.
Che would still stay with Sadam and them because

I'm not too sure on this to be honest.... I know they SAY there were links between the Taliban and the factions responsible, but as the only news sources available to me are so heavily biased, I've had to discount them entirely.
As for whether Ché would have backed Iraq? I doubt it - but it is more likely that his backing of the Taliban. He most certianly would have attacked (*EDIT* verbally) America though. I don't think many people disputed that Saddam was a bit of a bastard, but they cleverly iced over the fact that he was an AMERICAN SUPPORTED bastard. For that reason alone Ché wouldn't have sided with him, even when his loyaltied DID change. Not to mention the regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan weren't/aren't exactly his cup of tea, were/are they?
I'm sure the long awaited (if unjust) retaliatory attacks from al qu'ida(sp?) on american soil would have received Ché's condemnation, just like everyone else. In fact didn't even DPRK condemn these attacks?

Hallo at all, im new at this board and im looking forward to spent more time in that forum which i liked so much at once.
OnTopic, i want to say that i couldnt believe that Che would support Saddam or even the Talibans. He would concentrate his hate against US in Latin America and off course in Cuba by trying to establish different smaller revolutions. My 2 cents.

Which mean he would be anti USA, but on the long term also anti Sovjet Union, he wanted free (in a way) states, not to be under the control of Moscow
