A few months ago, the Massachusetts Supreme Court, declared it was unconstitutional to prevent same sex marriges. Since that declaration, the conservatives and the religious right have come out of the woodwork to protest it. Now the ruling is being heavily debated at the State House.

They are actually trying to make a constitutional amendment barring same sex marriages. This will be the first time, that restrictions against a particular group will be placed in the constitution.

If the SJC ruling is defeated, it is a huge win by the highly reactionary Catholic church in Boston. Separation of church and state in Massachusetts will officially be defunct.

Look for this to be a critical topic of debate in the upcoming elections. Kerry has already come out against it. Bush naturally condemns it.

Massachusetts debate on same-sex marriage heats up

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Massachusetts lawmakers were expected to convene for a second day on Thursday to decide whether to amend the state constitution and ban same-sex marriages.

The extraordinary constitutional convention began on Wednesday and drew an estimated 3,700 people protesting on both sides of the issue, lining the halls and stairwells of the Statehouse. Hundreds more gathered outside chanting slogans and waving signs. Chants of "Let the people vote" could be heard from people on both sides of the issue.

"Civil unions don't equal civil rights," read one sign. Another said, "Massachusetts for equality."

The move to debate such an amendment to the state constitution comes one week after the state's highest court ruled that same-sex couples were entitled to marriage -- not simply civil unions.

Thanks for the Artical Disgustapated, I am not particularly hot on my US politics, but even I had heard of this. I find it utterly sickening that "people"... allow me to rephrase, bigots who have some sort of stupid problem with homosexuals that they are prepaired to support such a social injustice, which has been openly declared by the Massachusetts Supreme Court as being unconstitutional.

The fact that Bush supports it is not particularly shocking, but the fact there has been such a conservative backlash is supprising. I knew that many US citizens were rightwing in their outlook but I never expected anything on his scale, 3,700 people who care so much as to actualy go out and protest... Even if it is both sides of the argument.

Its a catch 22 when you look at it. Religion is supposed to be separate from government but the leaders of the protest were popes. How can they keep the two institutions separate when their basis of protest is religious? The supreme court ruled it unconstitutional, so to counter-act the bill because of theological beliefs would inflict on the separation act. Hell, if the church cared about their image that much they wouldnt have relocated Cardinal Law when he was accused of molesting children, to me that would be the bigger concern. Especially since there has been a record of 89 sexual offenses concerning the catholic church since the 1950's. Ouch.

India, I would agree with you in that I don't find the idea of homosexuality attractive in the slightest. However, I have to recognise the freedom of people to disagree with my own viewpoint. Just as I expect the right to live my life as I choose, I respect the right of others to do the same.

So, you don't think someone should have equal rights because you don't happen to be gay.

Because you happen to be attracted to the opposite sex, you want to "ban" same-sex marriages??

That is, honestly, one of the most disgusting sentiments I have ever heard.

How dare you impose YOUR morality on the rest of the world!!!

Im fine with the whole gay marriage thing, I dont have a problem with it. I dont understand what the big deal is, everybody should get a chance 2 live a normal life. 2 deny Gays and Lesbians right 2 marry would be 2 discriminate and that simply is wrong. Peace :D
