Make no mistake, this is a symptom of an overall problem we've been having here in the South for well over a century. The lie that America is a post-racial society is a vicious one, because it hides the damage of a social disease that has been rotting the South at its very core.

There needs to be a campaign of complete cultural De-Confederation. The fist 20 or so pages they are divided and being very careful in commenting. That breaks down after a few pages. Then they spend an awful lot of time hoping that the perp wasn't white because it would damage their movement. Then...when the first vague pictures came out...they spend an awful lot of time and effort in trying to speculate of the ethnicity of the perp doubting he is white....and when the clear pictures come out.....they spend an awful lot of effort in trying to paint him as a mental loner. I'm 100% in favour of burning every Confederate flag in existence and renaming all the streets but let's be clear that this is not just a problem of the south. There was no Confederate flag in Ferguson, Baltmore and Staten Island, and while it can be argued that those were different situations to that which just happened in Charleston, and while I'm definitely agreeable to the argument that there is a specific type of revanchist and militarist racism in the south that perhaps doesn't exist in such a way further north, I think it's a mistake to think that the terrorism of this week is only something that could happen below the Mason-Dixon Line. Psychiatry in its current form exists solely in order to enable those whose psychological conditions prevents them from being useful to the capital to become fully productive, rather than caring about their actual problems (there are also schools of psychotherapy which take a different approach, but are typically reserved only for the rich and privileged).
