A person I know said this
"I racked up some pretty gnarly student debt, but I don't blame the government. I entered into the contract with the University, the Bank, and the Student Loan Services by my own free will. How is it anyone else's problem/fault that I am now endebted and must pay it back".
I don't really now a response to that. How about ya'll?
"Duly noted".
There is little point in discussing a person's own free will into submission to capital. S/he probably has a high social position and will get a well paid job, so it will not matter much to her/him.

I agree with this. If they are not in such a high social position after all, I guess you could tell them that they had no choice but to fall victim to the usury that are student loans, or else they'd not have had any chance for education, a good career, and doing what they wanted. You are not really acting out of your free will if your only alternative harms you severely. That's a basic example of coercion.

The argument from the left isn't "It's horrible that you got a student loan", but that "it's horrible that you HAVE to get a student loan in the first place".

It was the person's choice but it shouldn't be the option, it should be free to begin with.

Alright, but now why did tuition rise? I think I know its because of capitalism shifting its center of operation from the western to the developing world, but I cant back that up.

I'm going out on a limb here, which I fear will be cut down by a better theory, but is it an outright necessity of capitalism to expand the debt industry as the only means of economic growth?
I think we could also say that is able to do so because of the increasing reliance on degrees and the increasing instability of employment for those without degrees.

To be fair degrees help less than you might think.
Regarding the way debt works and why its such a huge thing right now, its probably an effort by capital to retain someone's entrapment within the system after they've got an education. I'd expand more buty head hurt p. bad.

Yeah, debt is definitely an effective method of control.
