N.W.A. was much better than many of the acts that came after them because they tended to be more realistic when describing the realities of inner city life. N.W.A. also had a wry sense of humor. Remember the part of "Dopeman" when the Hispanic guy threatens to kill the "dopeman" because he sold bad crack to his sister and got her sick? I can't imagine many of the later gangster rappers putting something like that in their songs. It would detract from their macho posturing.

N.W.A. lost most of it's street cred. Even Eazy-E did being that his name is to big now a days. Don't even get me started on the rest of the members. Ice Cube? Terrible. This tends to happen whenever the rappers get to big then loose their spark. That being said the first section of rappers I posted had that happen to them, although mostly here in the bay area. Still, I was so sad going into high school and seeing some of these kids wearing tank tops with the strange music logo on them.

Also I feel it necessary to mention DO NOT BLAST ANY OF THESE SONGS IN ANYWHERE RESEMBLING A HOOD. Especially the Xicano ones. Those are actually considered gang-related.

The wholesomeness of some Gangsta Rap has been questioned a great deal. It's a medium for expressing anger toward white bourgeois society, of course, but there's the treatment of women in this genre, especially in a context of commercialization; one of the less obnoxious examples is found in "Always Strapped" by Birdman:

Whether this is a generation gap manifestation is something I can't be completely sure of; Rap was invented in the early 1980s when I was already an adult and the idiom may be understood differently by younger folks. Most of German gangsta rap I tend to listen to is combined with a foreign accent (Haftbefehl, Olexesh, etc.) - it may be equivalent to American rap with a "black accent". Most Germans would consider this as "ugly", too. In the past, when hip hop was not yet mainstream in Germany, people would respond "Ouuuh, ya talkin' 'bout da dangeruz gangstazz who can't speak properly, aye?" while trying to throw up gang signs, when I told them what music I listen to. Now this stereotype is reserved explicitly for gangsta rap, which they still laugh at because they expect them to speak "proper German". Not to mention their general aversion to criminality and poverty.
