This is a documentary that was produced back in the early 80s by People For the American Way (a progressive liberal organization founded by Norman Lear). It details the rise of the American Religious Right, with the people involved being very candid about their motives.

It features some of the most infamous figures of the Christian Right, including now dead individuals like Jerry Falwell and James Robinson, and still living individuals like Phyllis Schlafly and Pat Robertson. Their tactics were deviously Machiavellian, their politics were frightfully reactionary, and their aims were nakedly totalitarian.

They were (and still are) actively attempting to rewrite history to create a national mythology in which the USA was the exceptional nation favored by God. At one point in the film they attempt to ban any schoolbooks that mention slavery, poverty, evolution, and even computers.

There is no doublespeak here. They are completely open and honest about their views. NOTHING is taken out of context.

It's very hard to watch it and not immediately find some sort of parallel to the Nazis (even though the parallel is rather imperfect). Things like book burnings, huge mytic/political rallies, etc.

...Fortunately, the political power of this group have been on significant decline over the last decade. But it's actually rather chilling to watch this movement being born.
