I found this article on the website of the British Cuba Solidarity Campaign the other day, it is mainly promoting a book on the subject but in itself is quite interesting. Who would have imagined that Cuba is being attacked from such unlikely sources?

The Bacardí rum company is one of the most successful and recognisable brands in the world. It spends millions on marketing itself as the spirit of youth and vitality. But behind its image as a party drink lies a very different story.

In this book, investigative journalist Hernando Calvo Ospina brings to light the commercial and political activities of the Bacardí empire to reveal its role in fostering the 40-year long confrontation between the United States and the revolutionary government of Cuba.

Through meticulous research, Ospina reveals how directors and shareholders of the family-owned firm have aggressively worked to undermine the Castro government. He explores how they have been implicated in supporting paramilitary organisations that have carried out terrorist attacks, and reveals their links to the extreme right-wing Cuban-American Foundation that supported Ronald Reagan's Contra war in Nicaragua.

Bacardí: The Hidden War explains the company's hand in promoting 'special interest' legislation against its competitor, Havana Club Rum, which is manufactured in Cuba and promoted by the European company Pernod-Ricard. Ospina reveals the implications of Bacardí's involvement in this growing dispute that threatens to create a trade war between America and Europe.

Exploring the Bacardí empire's links to the CIA, as well as its inside links with the Bush administration, this fascinating and readable account shows how multinational companies act for political as well as economic interests.

This is exactly why I only drink rum that comes from Jamaica. Well, aside from the fact that it kicks the crap out of Bacardi any day of the week.

The only "real" Cuban rum widely available today is Havana Club. Not only is this a much finer rum than Bacardi but it is also I believe promoted by the
Cuban government. Remember that when you use Cuban products you are defying the aims of the US blockade and helping the Cuban economy.

When you buy Bacardi, you are funding terrorism and support for US anti-Cuban activity. Those who drink Bacardi, YOU ARE FUNDING THE STARVATION AND MURDER OF THOUSANDS OF CUBANS!

i dont wanna hijack this interesting thread, but how effective is boycotting?

If we boycott, output will decrease, laying workers off
If we boycott, profit will decrease, bosses screw wages to regain profit they want

What you think?

i dont have a fixed position on this, thats why im interested, an example i use is Marks and Spencers and them supporting zionism, shud i get clothes from there?

It doesn't surprise me at all the Bacardi is pulling this crap. Isn't rum made from sugar/sugarcane? I bet they'd love to get their hands on the cane fields in Cuba. I'm sure that Bacardi isn't trying to help the U$ as much as they're trying to help themselves to Cuba's resources.

Bacardi is garbage rum anyway.

Some actually good tasting rums are:

Goslings (Bermuda)
Mount Gay (Barbados)
Pussers

Bacardi basically-- well--- truly ran Cuba during Batista's time.

After his victory, Castro nationalized all of their factories, and took millions from the company. Bacardi wants their U.S.-friendly dictatorship back!

Simple as that.

I like Bacardi Rum, especially all the new flavors. I haven't bought it since I heard about all this, though I'll still drink it if someone is around.

I didn't know that Cuba exported rum, is it any good ? I mostly drink Jamaican shit.

I wouldn't imagine Cuban rum is readily available in the USA, due to the embargo. However here in the UK Havana Club rum is the most readily available Cuban export rum. An to answer your question on the quality I can assure that Havana Club (the seven year old blend in particular) is a much better drink than bacardi, and makes just as good a mixer.

Of course, it is up to individuals to decide what they consume, but I will never spend my money on Bacardi again knowing that I could be funding terrorist acts against a soverign nation!
