Has anyone else here seen this movie?

It started out kind of slow but man, it really hit its stride about a third of the way through or so, and just turns into a mesmerizing, fucked up & funny psychodrama. I had seen previews for this film but the trailers really didn't do it justice, thematically it was completely different than I thought it was going to be. It really made me appreciate Rosamund Pike as an actress...she killed her role in this, I thought. Ben Affleck plays a doofus, which is appropriate for him. "Doofus" is the role Ben Affleck was born to play!

The soundtrack by Trent Reznor is really good, and very appropriate for this kind of film I thought. I think this was his second collaboration with David Fincher (the first being "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", right?) Great direction and cinematography as well. If you like dark comedies and/or dramas about really deranged people and fucked up relationships, you'll love this.

I saw it. Actually, I saw it on a date with my girlfriend... it wasn't the greatest date movie, but whatever... haha. I thought it was an interesting movie. That cinematic couple was actually perfect for each other, I think. Who else belongs with a psychopath but a psychopath?

That being said, the gender politics made me a bit uneasy, not for the message the movie actually delivers, but for the message that I'm afraid many people will see.

I briefly looked at a thread on IMDb about whether the movie is "feminist" or not actually. The thread quickly devolved of course but looking at the movie from a "gender studies" POV is interesting

On the one hand, the main female character is extremely manipulative and employs her sexuality in disturbing ways (in addition to being a narcissistic & overly privileged psychopath). But, on the other hand, she is without a doubt the smartest character in the film, and one kind of gains a respect for the level of pathology involved in what she does.

Even though the ending of the film is a little ambiguous, I think it's clear how the story ultimately will end...

Yeah, my primary concern is that it feeds the fire for those assholes who try to claim that every woman who reports a sexual crime is lying.

I thought it was a good film. The bit on the media was also quite interesting. Overall as a villain, I thought she was great, coming close to having that genius quality that made her plans completely inhumanely efficient, but still being a flawed being and having to come to terms with that as best she can.

I tried watching it through an 'is this trying to teach me anything about gender' lens, but yeah, after it started getting interesting I figured that went out of the wayside, as she was too much of an outlier to really get any proper generalisations from her. Definitely wasn't a victim though!
