As mentioned in the most recent thread, the music section has, unfortunately, been pretty dead. So I was wondering if there were any fans of punk rock on here. I'm talkin Black Flag, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Misfits, etc.
What are some of your guys' favorite bands? Can be related to politics or not, it's whatever. :che:

Longtime punk here, with a preference for late '70s, early '80s bands from around the world.
All-time faves include Saints, Discharge, Negative Approach, and... literally thousands more.

my background is firmly in punk, started with skatepunk (bad religion, nofx, rancid etc etc) went to hardcore (AF, sick of it all, dropkicks etc) then to more OI music (cocksprarrer, the oppressed, angelic upstarts etc), if i go out in the squat/autonomous scene most music is still hc/punk, crust, d-beat etc which i really enjoy, more to see at concerts with a beer and friends than what i would listen too at home or on my mp3 though.
at this moment i listen, besides my nostalgia favorites, more to other genres like hiphop, electronic music and metal related genres but some punk stuff i'm still very much into, a bit more intelligent often then when i was younger though, often more experimental, noise/jazz stuff like the current work of the Ex or really heavy slow sludgy/doom stuff like EYEHATEGOD or primitive man.

That moment when you are about to link loads of bands and say punk is still contemporary and then you realise that you are now 22 and not 14... more of a punk fan than a punk, prefer ska-mixed stuff than out and out 3 chords, but there is a relative smorgasboard in choice and taste when it comes to the genre.

I grew up in a major punk background due to my father being in a punk band in the 80s (and is still a punk journo), though I don't follow the scene as actively as I should.
In broad terms (everything from old punk to Oi to Ska) I love anything from Black Flag to Sham 69 to the Angelic Upstarts to even stuff like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Some of the best gigs I've been to have been ska punk rather than hardcore.
Here's a pretty cool hardcore band from Japan.

Also, NoFX makes the most smug liberal songs ever.

I used to be a punk / hardcore / crust / anarcho-punk scenester / drunk teenager in the town I grew up in, which had a big but close scene. I really absorbed a pretty good bit about anarchist politics, though also a bit of misinformation about Marxism.
But I got bored, I moved to a new city, there wasn't so much of a cohesive punk scene there, and it sort of took a backseat as I found new scenes - bike messengers, the IWW, etc.
I moved again, the scene here is super cliquey, I'm just like, whatevs, ya know?
I mostly listen to thrash / grindcore / powerviolence / etc. these days. I'm a bit more of a metalhead than I used to be. Also I'm not even an anarchist anymore

Same. I used to listen to a lot of the genre, though, back in high school. But, like Mari3l said, I was never a "punk" in terms of fashion or even general attitude (although listening to punk music did get me interested in political topics somewhat, and I have had a consistent distrust of authority figures but that's been with me for almost my whole life).
I've heard of or have listened to almost all the bands mentioned in this thread, though, with the exception of some that psycho posted. One album that I do still listen to is "Dirty Sanchez" by Zeke...that album features hardcore as it's meant to be played. My favorite punk band from back in the day are the Dead Kennedys, though. They managed to combine politics into their music in a way that was humorous & thought-provoking without being too "preachy" (well, before "Frankenchrist" anyway...) and their musicianship was really good when compared to most of their contemporaries.
I also like punk rock music that's all about just getting loaded and being a scumbag, like the Dwarves or (early era) GG Allin.

Some of my favorite albums from this genre, in no particular order:
1) "Plastic Surgery Disasters" - the Dead Kennedys
2) "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" - the Dead Kennedys
3) "Group Sex" - the Circle Jerks
4) "Peace Through Vandalism/When In Rome, Do As The Vandals" - the Vandals (most underrated punk album ever, it was one of my favorites...never really liked much of later-era Vandals, though)
5) "Walk Among Us" - the Misfits
6) "Damaged" - Black Flag (also the "First Four Years" comp is good too)
7) "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" - Sex Pistols
8) "Inflammable Material" - Stiff Little Fingers
9) "Rancid" - Rancid (self-titled first album)
10) "Damned Damned Damned" - the Damned
honorable mention: "Dance With Me" by TSOL

Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables is one of my top favorite albums of all time! I actually ran into Klaus Fluoride's twin brother in San Francisco once. He recognized my DK shirt and was like "oh that's my brother's band." It was pretty interesting.

I mostly listen to thrash / grindcore / powerviolence / etc.
I recently heard some powerviolence; do you know the band Ceremony? They're having a show in Berkeley tomorrow with Negative Approach but unfortunately I can't make it. Also I just realized you posted a DOOM song as I mentioned it in the thread. Fuck Peaceville is a great album. Political crust punk is always fun

Yep, Doom is good shit. For the ultimate in Discharge-influenced craziness, though, it's hard to beat the Japanese. Here's an excellent overview:

And while most punk bands are left-wing, here are a few particularly RevLeft-friendly punk bands that I like:
the Dicks

Crucifucks

Newtown Neurotics

There are, of course, many others, but I've been listening to these a lot lately.

I was never really into punk besides screamo and hardcore. The first punk bands I listened to were Aus Rotten and Dystopia because I heard of them from a crustie I was friends with in high school.

I'm more on the crusty/traveller side of punk after a mispent youth in the goth/postpunk scene.
Music wise I'm more into the the ska/dub side of punk, bands like P.A.I.N., Inner Terrestrials, Citizen Fish, RDF, Autonomads, Black Star Dub Collective...
Need a few more posts before I can post any links to videos but will be back with some in a few posts time.

The Dicks are great! Hate The Police is my favorite song by them. Thanks for the other recs. When it comes to Communist bands, I really like Workers' United Front. They basically create punk versions of old Socialist anthems and give the money they get to Socialist/Communist/Anarchist causes. I can't post links yet, so here's a bastardization of what their bandcamp link looks like: workersunitedfront(dot)bandcamp(dot)com

I've heard Ceremony; I don't think they're super interesting. They'd still probably be fun live, I bet.
I like a lot of noisier stuff like Suppression, and the more metal side of things. That said, I have to say that Infest is one of the greatest bands of all time. I think I get bored of listening to the same stuff more than other people, so I go towards the weird end of things a lot.

Listening to 33rpm Aus Rotten LPs at 45rpm turns them from kinda a boring crusty hardcore band into amazing sick snotty throwback hardcore. Highly highly recommended.
I don't go to the shows around here anymore cause the people fucking piss me off 99% of the time. So I lost a lot of the exposure I had to it but I wish I could have more.
Also people make a huge deal out of noshing but at least here it never seems to actually be all that people talk it up to be. Idk I always imagine something a little more then I get involved in the pit and I just was expecting to have a bit more.

I really hate all of you Americans for getting the good shows, like, band xy is having TWO reunion shows and both of them in the US and I'd actually sell my liver to have them in Germany, so a major fuck you to all of you
