I don't know about you guys but Strike Anywhere is one of my favorite punk bands of all time. Funny thing is, I've never run into another person who's heard of them (aside from, I think, GR). Even folks here at college who listen exclusively to political punk/hardcore haven't heard of 'em and that's just a damn shame. So, do yourselves a favor and head over to http://www.exitenglish.com to hear their latest release...in a high quality flash stream...in its entirety. That's right, the whole damn thing without paying a fucking cent! Why? Because these guys are total fucking monarchists...(pssst...that's Marxists, dude)...whatever.

Indeed, I still listen to Change is a Sound and love it. I wasn't disappointed when I heard Exit English, although I must add that the relative shortness of the albums leaves you a feeling of wanting more which I don't think a lot of bands can do, along with the mix of political lyrics and not turing their songs into an obscure Chomsky speech, which is good.

Yeah, Exit English is crazy-short but I bought it just because they thought enough of their stuff to give it to me without any obligation. The songs are incredibly upbeat and optimistic when compared to other political music of the same genre.

these songs are for the dead / that the system forgets / these words add to the voices say / we’re not beaten yet / these truths another way to guard the light in your eyes / these days building potential we get back up to rise / up to rise / your voices sound / from underground / your dreams endure / ‘til days shall be no more.

-- 'Till Days Shall Be No More

I also own Change is a Sound...neither one is complete without the other...neither one is better than the other. Chalkline is just an amazing song!

This isn't hardcore, it's kinda post-hardcore/emo with elements of punk. :P

Jesus man. Why not get specific about it.

I don't think there is a bit of Emo in Strike Anywhere, none at all. They are more of a straight up punk band, but sometimes they verge on hardcore.

I suprises me that Hampton listens to them.

Well yes, I will. Hardcore is more than a shouty band who are too "weird" to be metal. It's a scene with ethics and values. The musical style is only the tip of the iceberg in reality. So when you call a band "hardcore", you're saying quite a few things about it.

To quote a gazillion hardcore kids who have had this debate down the years: "get a clue".

Are you kidding me ? Do you actually think Strike Anywhere is a hardcore band ? Do you actually believe that they are in any way Emo as well ?

To quote myself (a guy who doesn't need to rely on "hardcore kids") get a fucking clue. There, I one upped you.

Seriously though, get a clue. Strike Anywhere is not a hardcore band. Sick of It All is a harcore band. Shadows Fall is a hardcore band.

Hah, I actually grew up listening to punk, or whatever genra and sub genre you wanna break a band down into. I mostly listen to rap nowadays, but, I still keep abreast of good punk, metal, hardcore bands that come along.

Yes I'm serious. yes I know what I'm talking about.

Shadows Fall are a fuckin metal band you douche.

Shut the fuck up and quit talking shit about something you know fuck all about.

Yeah, I knew I shouldn't have put that one on there. Have you ever heard their old demos ? When they first formed they were a hardcore band. You douche. How old are you ?

Shut the fuck up and quit talking shit about something you know fuck all about.

As soon as you stop mislabeling bands I will do that. Talking to you is not fun, you're a whiny little **** who can't talk about something without getting pissed. Dry you eye baby, it's only the internet.

Don't act like you're some punk rock intellectual, you seem to be a bit confused. Strike Anywhere is not a hardcore band nor are they an Emo band. And Thursday sucks as well. Your opinion doesn't hold much weight with me when you listen to that kind of bullshit.

Jesus Christ, I'm not the one getting pissy. Were you the moron who called Poison the Well a "screamo" band cos Rolling Stone told you so??

Weird, I just assume that when someone listens to one kind of music that they don't listen to much else, even though I listen to everything.

I half expected you to say "Why, because I'm black?". The other day I went up to this kid in a bar who was wearing a Rise Against shirt and said "You like those guys?" he looks at me and says "What motherfucker ? A nigger can't listen to punk rock?" ( he was black). So my nervous white guy stammer starts "Uhhh, no, umm, I, uh, just kinda, uhh, like Rise Against... sorry". It was akward.

Great...wonderful. Yeah, I mislabled Strike Anywhere. Still, you're all idiots.

Why are we all idiots ? The only one who called you on it was GR, and he's a little ****. I was only responding to him.

Jesus Christ, I'm not the one getting pissy. Were you the moron who called Poison the Well a "screamo" band cos Rolling Stone told you so??

I called Thursday a screamo band, because they are one. You're a fucking fool to assume I read Rolling Stone without ever having met me. I thought I made the term "screamo" up until I heard someone else say it. Thursday sucks, they are an Emo band with elements of hardcore, therefore they are screamo.

I know what hardcore is and you clearly don't. Read my posts and you might be on the way.

Someone's got a fucking ego. Oooh, look at Mr Punk Rock know it all. How old are you ? 14 ? 15 ?

Listen, instead of getting all you info from "hardcore kids" learn to think for yourself, it's alot easier. That way you won't have to go find a "hardcore kid" when you need to form an opinion on something. ****.

Listen kid, you don't need to link me to a Emo faq. I know perfectly well what Emo is, I'm from Seattle for christ's sake, the birthplace of Emo. I've eaten waffles with Sunny Day Real Estate  . Seriously though.

I don't like shitty bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday. I like a few Emo bands, but they are real Emo bands. None of this new, trendy MTV bullshit that kids like you are all of the sudden into.

I'll say it again, learn to think for yourself, it's much more convenient.

I'm into a wide variety of bands, varying from Taking Back Sunday to Rites of Spring to Lack to Turning Point. Clearly I missed the TRL with the Lack interview...

Maybe you should too...you might quite like that "MTV bullshit". And telling me I don't cos I clearly know more about this than you and I'm not relying on bluffing bullshit is pretty lame.

Sunny Day Real Estate suck. They're an indie band if you ask me.

Jesus..

The Lion King Soundtrack is the most hardcore you can get.

I thought you all knew.

And I'm the punk rock intellectual around here. Look at my knowledge on the subject...

Sex Pistols were the greatest emo band around.

Blink 182 is the most hardcore band around

The Ramones released the greatest Rap album around.

Don't deny it.

(haha, GR. You are the most hardcore because Hardcore [you know the one's with shirts from Hot Topic, gangsters] children across America told me so?)

I don't know what Hot Topic is, but I'm guessing it's another form of commodified rebellion which corporations specialise in. And it's not about being "the most hardcore", it's just about knowing the most about hardcore. And I do. At least between myself and Urban Rubble.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. Just like all those "emo" bands on major labels that you listen to. It's packaged punk rock designed to pacify trendy morons. It's all the rage right now. Too bad in a year all you emo kids will be listening to something else. Who knows what it they'll sell you guys next ? Country punk ? Hardcore hip hop ? Emo classical ?

Christ. You're really scraping the barrel. You accuse me of listening to MTV emo, then you rave about how many scene points you got off Sunny Day Real Estate.

As for "relying" on hardcore kids for arguments, no, not the case. Just you aren't the first type to spout nonsense about hardcore and emo and the like, hence there are certain phrases which have become cliches.

You called me a moron who knew nothing about emo etc etc then said it started in Seattle. Get a fucking clue.
You leeched off once meeting Sunny Day Real Estate and acted as if that makes you any kind of authority. Get a fucking clue.
You accused me of listening to only MTV music, to which I listed the wide variety of "emo" I have in my hi-fi, yet you ignored it and carried on a straw man argument. Get a fucking clue.
You're carrying on this debate (anyone on this forum should know I'm incapable of not having the last word). Get a fucking clue.

Nothings wrong with Madball. This kid has a problem with thinking for himself, he keeps mentioning how all the "harcore kids" say this or that. I told him to go find one and get back to me. Madball's alright.

You accuse me of listening to MTV emo, then you rave about how many scene points you got off Sunny Day Real Estate.

I mentioned that as a joke, I was like 10 when it happened. In your words "get a clue".

You called me a moron who knew nothing about emo etc etc then said it started in Seattle. Get a fucking clue.

I never said you didn't know anything about Emo. Do you think I give a shit what you do or do not know about music ? The whole reason this thing started is because you are a hostile **** and you keep talking shit. You're the one who originally accused me of getting my shit from Rolling Stone, so don't ***** when I point out the fact that you listen to trendy MTV emo pop bullshit.

And yes, Emo did start in Seattle and Olympia. As much as I hate to have that curse upon my city, it's true. Have you ever heard of Sub Pop ? Perhaps K records ?

You accused me of listening to only MTV music, to which I listed the wide variety of "emo" I have in my hi-fi, yet you ignored it and carried on a straw man argument. Get a fucking clue.

I don't care what you listen to. You're missing the point. I don't give a shit about your tastes, the only reason I'm talking to you is because you're a know it all little **** and you won't shut up. Stop telling me about your Emo shit, I don't care, Emo is the lowest form of music out there. It's a trend. Nothing more.

This isn't a debate. It's a dumbass little argument. I will keep antagonizing you because you're fucking annoying. By the way, you said get a fucking clue 4 times in that, you really have a high opinion of yourself. Shut up.

What the fuck man?? Sub Pop was in nappies when emo started out. You ever heard of fucking Dischord??

I understand that. But Sup Pop's contributions to the formation of Emo cannot be overstated. Yes, Dischord was very influential in shaping Emo, but those bands were simply planting the seeds for what emo would become. Dischord was like pre-Emo. Bands like Dag Nasty and the like. They were the foundations of Emo, but K, Sub Pop and the other Seattle labels and bands truly defined what the Emo sound was.

Good God, listen to me. Discussing the roots of Emo. I feel dirty, I need a shower. I don't care if you think I'm wrong, whatever, I have no interest in being the most knowledgeable person on the subject of Emo at Che Lives. Mostly because I hate Emo, but also because, who the fuck really cares how much the other guy knows ? Why does any of this matter ?

I started downloading an assload of Strike Anywhere about a month ago, when I was looking for "Talking Union" by Almanac Singers, and "Aluminum Union" by Strike Anywhere came up on the search results. Since then, I've never looked back.

...I don't listen to them much, though. Not much to my taste. I prefer Almanac Singers (folk), Against Me! (punk, mostly acoustic), Warsawpack (a mix of punk, blues, and hip- hop), and, well, pretty much anything from G7 Welcoming Committee Records (www.g7welcomingcommittee.com). Randy is another personal favourite of mine.

I would like to add that though I initially accepted that I was wrong and GR was right, I have recently seen Strike Anywhere labled as "hardcore" on several occasions. The band even refers to itself on the website as "punk/HC or whatever we are." Fuck you and your fascist musical labeling!!!

Yeah, so...blow me, I guess.
