President Obama issued an Executive Order declaring Venezuela a national emergency with respect to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security of the US.
Within 3 weeks over 10 million Venezuelans, in a country of 31 million, signed a petition demanding he revoke this order.
In February this year Venezuela thwarted another US planned coup attempt against their government.

Recently every single country of Latin America and the Caribbean called on Obama to revoke his Executive Order.
Since 2000, the US has spent over $120 million in Venezuela to undermine its government.

This in spite of what ex-President Jimmy Carter has said Venezuela has the best election system in the world.

Venezuela is recognized for having free health care and university education for all. No illiteracy. Women have 6 months maternity leave, and now even housewives receive pensions.

[EmergencyResponseforUSAttackonIranorSyria] Hear Venezuela's top diplomat to the U.S. on Thursday, May 14

Save the Date. Please let others know.

Venezuela's Top Diplomat to the U.S. will be speaking at DePaul on Thursday evening, May 14.

We have a great opportunity coming up on Thursday evening, May 14, at DePaul University, to hear what the highest ranking Venezuelan diplomat in the U.S. has to say about the current situation between the U.S. and Venezuela.

On that date Maximilian Sanchez Arvelaiz, who was appointed by the government of Venezuela as ambassador to the U.S. in February 2014, will be speaking in a program that begins at 7 p.m. at DePaul's Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 N. Kenmore, Room 254.

The U.S. government has refused to accept Ambassador Arvelaiz as ambassador. Why? -- Because of the continued attempts by the U.S. to dictate what should happen in Venezuela. So what the government of Venezuela has done is to designate Mr. Arvelaiz as Venezuela's Charge d'Affairs in the U.S., and he will be speaking to us in that position.

As you undoubtedly know, the U.S. has been attacking Venezuela's democratically elected government for years. Just this past February, the U.S. government backed an attempted coup and overthrow of the government. This U.S. attempt at regime change was defeated.

Then President Obama, on March 9, issued an Executive Order declaring that Venezuela is " a threat to the national security of the U.S.," and placed additional sanctions on Venezuela.

Every country in Central and South America and the Caribbean condemned and rejected this Order by President Obama, and urged him to revoke it. This was a main topic at the recent Organization of American States meeting, which welcomed Cuba to the table after many years of being blocked there by the U.S.

Within 3 weeks of Obama's Order, over 10 million Venezuelans---in a population of 31 million--signed a petition rejecting the U.S. words and actions.

And still, Obama has not revoked this Executive Order or the sanctions against Venezuela.

What does this long history of U.S. attacks on Venezuela, and resistance by Venezuela and other countries mean for the current state of relations between the U.S. and Venezuela? This is one of the main topics we look forward to hearing Ambassador Arvelaiz talk about on Thursday, May 14.

We urge you to participate in this meeting, to invite your friends and groups you may be part of. If you have any questions, please let us know. Please note this facebook announcement of the May 14 program: https://www.facebook.com/events/461767260655184/

Maximilien Arvelaiz: Venezuela Is Hope, Not A Threat - Labor Beat on YouTube

Maximilien Arvelaiz:
Venezuela Is Hope, Not A Threat

About 100 persons filled a lecture hall at DePaul University on Chicagos north side on May 14, 2015 to hear Maximilien Sanchez Arvelaiz, Venezuela Ambassador designate. After Obama declared Venezuela a national security threat in March of 2015, the Venezuelan government recalled Arvelaiz, its Charg dAffaires in the U.S., for consultation.

Because of the current security threat label put on Venezuela, the U.S. government has not given diplomatic recognition to Arvelaiz, so for now his functioning title is Ambassador designate.

This move by the Obama administration continues the U.S. campaign to isolate and undermine the democratically-elected government of its current President Nicolas Maduro, who follows in the political footsteps of the late Hugo Chavez.

The situation is fraught with U.S. intrigues involving the countrys right wing, which seeks to bring down -- one way or another -- the anti-imperialist government in Caracas.

Ambassador designate Arvelaiz described his initial alarm at finding out about Obamas declaration that Venezuela was a "threat". He also pointed to such developments as every country in Latin America and the Caribbean calling on Obama to formally revoke his executive order.

Arvelaiz's speaking style was low-keyed and conversational as he summarized recent Venezuelan history and Chavez's Bolivarian revolution, which he likened to a mixture of FDR's New Deal and the U.S. Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. It was a movement of "economic and social inclusion".

In the most recent, 2013 local elections, the result was a 55% vote for the Bolivarian revolution. But then "a tiny group of upper middle-class people from the opposition decided to go to the streets of Caracas...A coup was on its way in Venezuela during these days", Arvelaiz explained. "An attempt to overthrow a legitimate and democratic government."

"As I'm speaking you've got a couple of women that are in Washington, DC, and they've just received an award from the N.E.D. [National Endowment for Democracy. For more info: <http://goo.gl/PXiLHO>]. And one of these ladies' husband is one of the leaders of this coup...I prefer President Maduro to be given an award from the World Food Organization than from the N.E.D."
