I have seen a few articles today suggesting that the wheels are being set in motion for the return of the draft in the U.S., possibly by March of 2005. Do share any other articles you have come across.

An estimate given by a "Libertarian" think tank suggests that the U.S. will need anywhere from 240,000 to 480,000 troops to occupy Iraq. The estimate was figured by comparing the U.S. occupation to what the author considered the closest historical parallel--Britain's occupation of Northern Ireland--and applying the same troops-to-occupied population ratio.

On top of this, the occupation of Afghanistan continues, and I have every expectation that Bush and the Neocons are plotting more wars as I write this.

What are the implications of restoring the draft? Will Bush be able to get this through Congress? Will the American people tolerate this? Will this mean the mass protests of the 1960s all over again?

:o That would be awesome if the U$ people re-enacted the protests of the 60's!

Of course they are going to bring back the draft! If the U$ wants to go around the world destroying other sovereign nations, they should provide the manpower. It is so laughable that they feel they can do whatever they want, without any other countrys supporting their decisions and then expect the rest of the world to pick up the pieces. Afghanistan doesn't have oil in the ground (but a great pipeline now), but Iraq does. Wonder why there are only 10,000 U$ troops in Afghanistan and 130,000 U$ troops in Iraq?

dj,

I also hope to see such protests again, but do you think it will happen?

You are quite right to bring up the unilateral attitude of the Bush administration as being a key factor in creating the need for more American soldiers. Do you believe that the need for a draft will be as severe if one of the Democratic candidates unseat Bush, as they have talked about getting NATO, etc. involved?

Will a Democrat get the UN to pick up the pieces in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.?

I've read recently that this new addition of 30,000 troops on the "stop loss" decree, is sort of a precursor to the draft.

Nothing would surprise me.

Bringing back the draft would be the worst mistake the Republicrats ever made, and possibly be the best thing for leftist in decades. We've got faster ways of spreading information now, so the destment will be even stronger.
