I bought a 6 pack of Killian's and I quite like it, but my girlfriend hates it. Any one got any recommendations? What're your favorite brands n shit?

when i was drinking, my favorite of the big brands was Shiner -- specifically, Shiner Black.

i don't know if you can get that where you are, though. i tried finding it outside of Texas, and only one place -- a shitty bbq joint -- in Portland has it. in fact, before then, the last time i saw it was somewhere in southern california... barstow, i think.

eta. i think i bought all the available shiner in barstow because i needed it. barstow is an unbelievable shithole.

I usually drink cider or Guinness myself. At the moment my drink is Henry Westons 8.2% cider. One of the best things about my recent weight loss is that I can't drink too much and a few drinks will give me the buzz I crave.

sierra nevada torpedo (pale ale tastes better but torpedo is like 2-3% more alcohol and is basically the same thing with more hops in it)

if you like liquor i've been getting really into brandy lately but if you can find sobieski vodka it's like 15 bucks for 1.75L (or however much a handle is) and it's better than smirnoff which is like twice the price

tried to pick things they sell around the states but really you should check out whatever local craft breweries are making if you're looking for taste because it's nearly guaranteed to be better than anything sold country-wide or internationally

as far as wine goes i have no fucking idea, wine tastes like sour grass to me

My drink has always been Bacardi and Coca-Cola. I'm a real wimp when it comes to alcohol....not because I'm afraid of drunkenness, but because I hate the idea that alcoholic beverages have to taste bad.

I mean, I HAVE drank moonshine before, so I'm not exactly afraid of hard liquor. It's the taste that's the biggest barrier for me. It's why my fav wines are stuff like Yellow Bird and Manischewitz....they're both cheap, taste sweet, and can get you loaded really quickly without you realizing it.

One of my friends liked a drink combination that he referred to as the "cock and balls". Which was a pint of PBR and two shots of vodka, usually Stoli, set up in a triangle formation (hence the cock and balls, get it, hurr hurr) He'd take both shots in order and then chug the pint. I was skeptical at first but it's actually pretty fun and a good way to initiate the night. I haven't had an alcoholic drink in several weeks, though...alcohol has kind of lost it's luster for me.

On the very rare occasion when I do get beer, it's usually something cheap like Olympia or PBR.

It's less labor - no mashing, or hopping, less clean-up, but has much longer secondary fermentation (aging) - a year versus the month that most beer takes, which requires more patience and longer-term storage space.

Ciders: Scrumpy (goes without saying) Black Dragon, Thatchers Gold/Heritage, Trufflers or Snufflers or whatever the hell it is called, the red bulmers one which is basically WKD, Black Rat. Old Rosie as well, though my masochistic tendencies have lightened since I last was in her clutches. A good rule is it if comes in a square box with a little nozzle and it is 6.5% + it'll be delectable.

Lagers: Budwiser, Becks, Stella, Kronenbourg, Carling, Fosters, as long as it goes around the 4% mark and up it'll be ok. Polish beer is normally quite nice, there is also Baltika which I believe is russian that can knock for six.

Whiskey: Juro, Penderyn, Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark, Bells (for price considerations)... there should be more, being a whiskey phillistine (and yeah I have it with coke and wot m8) isn't fun.

Vodka: Diesel, Petrol, Unleaded.

Going to try and brew some vegan mead with my partner for summer solstice. We're getting handfasted so we want something fancy to drink :)

As far as recommendations go, a good still cider is my favourite drink. Got a pint of Black Dragon right now to go with the work I'm doing. (I know, it's not even lunchtime yet, but it's sunny and it's not like I do this every day...)

Also, if you can find any, chocolate stout is amazing.

for beer I like Dogfish Head but dont' like their IPA's. I really like Allagash and their white ale, I drank a lot of that in Maine. Now its milwaukie's best 16oz six packs and when I have one or two left I may swing by the store to buy a 24oz steel reserve or camo black for an extra amazing evening or morning. I am fine with Old Crow bourbon. I should really just stop all of this.

It burns like hellfire going down, but this shit will show you the face of GOD!I guess the legal shit still not as good as the "real deal". Heard from others that the moonshine they had was some of the smoothest cleanest liquor around, yet still stronger than any legal shit. Mass producers go by what's cheapest to make. There's things that can't be replicated on an industrial level.

Best liquor I've had was some vodka from Ukraine. It was 40%, but was so smooth it tasted like water, and still fucked me up! Iswear it must've just been water diluted with tasteless sedatives, it was that good. Haven't been able to find it again, and don't have much hope with all that bullshit going on there right now.

i'm not a fan of Blue Moon to be honest. It's a corporate 'craft' beer that's an ersatz version of an old belgian beer style that I really like. I tried it a few years ago and was pretty underwhelmed. Not much depth of flavour which is what you really need in a style that's usually low ABV and quite high in sugars

I live in the western US, and we've got all kinds of great breweries over here... Sockeye, Deschutes, Outlaw, Ninkasi, Lagunitas, etc.... it's all great. I'm really lucky, I've tried a lot of great beers, and I still have a lot to try. And of course, I like craft beers from everywhere else too.

I'm a big fan of stouts/porters (a type of beer, for the guy who thought they were seperate categories) though, which is kind of inconvenient sometime, because western breweries tend to specialize in IPA's (northwestern hops have a unique taste that they like to emphasize). Deschutes Brewery makes a great porter though, as does Ninkasi. There are other western stouts out there, I just have yet to try them, because they primarily come in six packs, and I prefer the cheaper bomber bottles (I don't drink to get drunk). I also like Guiness, on occasion. I recently had a barleywine by Lagunitas that was delicious (it was called "Gnarleywine".) Oh, and I also recently tried a Baltic porter beer called "Black Boss" which was really good. That one, along with the others I've mentioned, will probably become a regular.

In terms of hard alcohol, I like absinthe, though I am searching for a brand that is affordable yet doesn't overdo the licorice overtones. I think I may like gin too, but I think I need to try more, when sober, to know for sure. I know that developing an appreciation for whiskey is what manly men are supposed to do, but I don't like the stuff... it all tastes like stale ("finely aged") cough medicine to me. Oh, and I don't drink vodka... Alcohol needs to have a taste.

Oh, and I'm surprised at how many people like PBR.... I know it's gotten to become the "hipster beer" lately, because it's so cheap... but have you guys ever been sober enough to taste the stuff? It's watery trash... just like Coors, and Budweiser, and all those other mass-produced beers... I have a theory that mass produced beers are targeted toward people who don't actually like the taste of beer...

Finally... Quail... I thought that vegans don't eat honey, which is what mead is made from? Mead without honey is not mead, though I don't doubt that you could make a decent mead-like substitute without honey.

Sewer Socialist
2nd July 2015, 21:32
Most vegans I know eat honey; the anti-honey stance is mostly for people who have just become vegan.

Watery beer is great for a hot day. As for being trash, it absolutely is, but I eat what I am. I can drink about half of a IPA before losing interest.

Speaking of which, I started drinking again, and I seem to have it under control. I think my problem was that I was feeling too self-destructive before, or no motivation to practice self-control.

So, looking at elderflower / elderberry recipes, they all seem to add sugar. Is that the norm? I was imagining more of a wine, like fermented from juice. Is it a thing to mix it with juice instead of sugar for more of a "wine"-iness?,

I'm not sure how it's supposed to taste, since I've never had it, but I'm interested in trying to make a sort of elderberry or elderflower champagne. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for an Angry Orchard elderflower champagne, maybe even with brettanomyces yeast.

I could also steep it in some kind of alcohol. It would probably make a good addition to a International-style gin (like Hendrick's).

I've always wanted to try real absinth and coca fortified wine(legal in some countries). Unfortunately the former isn't made the real pre-ban way(it either shitty vodka soaked in way too much wormwood with too much thujone and bitterers, or striped of thujone to meet ATF/EU standards). Too much thujone ruins the taste, too little takes away the unique clearheaded drunkenness if not overdone. Much of the old trade secrets may have been lost forever, so it's usually not the real deal. Also it's not drunk neat but mixed with cold water poured onto a perforated spoon holding sugar(not burned like the movies). Can also replace gin for martinis.
