Mother of Amos Yee, teen arrested for insensitive remarks on Christianity in video, says son is beyond control
Published on Mar 31, 2015 6:33 AM

A teenager who is in police custody for posting a video online that insulted Christianity and attacked Mr Lee Kuan Yew has been declared by his mother to be beyond her control.

A reliable source told The Straits Times Amos Yee's mother has made a police report to that effect.

On Sunday, Amos, who will turn 17 this year, was arrested for a video he posted last Friday that allegedly celebrated the death of Singapore's founding Prime Minister. The eight-minute-long video included remarks about Christianity that some people found insensitive.

In a statement yesterday, police said Amos will face charges in court today under Section 298 of the Penal Code for utterances against Christians with a "deliberate intent to wound religious feelings". Other charges include circulating an obscene object and making threatening, abusive or insulting communication which is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Amos, a school leaver who blogged that he intended to pursue a career in film and YouTube videos, was largely slammed by netizens over the video, although some defended his right to his opinion.

More than 20 police reports have been lodged against him over the video as well as over obscene material posted on his blog on Sunday. Both the video and the blog post have since been removed.

The video, called Lee Kuan Yew Is Finally Dead!, had been viewed more than 600,000 times by Sunday.

Mr Lee died on March 23, aged 91.

Lawyer Chia Boon Teck, who was among those who made police reports, said: "Mr Lee spent his life helping Singaporeans to put food on the table and build roofs over our heads. Since we need not worry about food and shelter, we can indulge in contemplating our right to hurt others with our words in the name of freedom of speech."Take a beer, Singaporeans.

The Court also granted him a bail amount set at S$20,000, under the condition that he will not post, upload or otherwise distribute any comment or content, whether directly or indirectly, to any social media or online service or website, while the current case against him is ongoing. The amount has been posted, and Yee is out on bail.

Isn't it just fantastic how because Singapore is a Thatcherite/Reaganite neoliberal capitalist country, the rest of the world tolerates its massive restrictions on personal freedoms?

Lee Kuan Yew had an iron grip and an ideology comparable to Pinochet or Park Chung-Hee, but was lucky enough to not kill quite as many in his quest for power.

Pretty damn articulate for a 16 year old kid. It was upsetting to read all the comments from westerners defending Lee Kuan Yew. It's so easy to praise a dictator when you don't have to live under his rule.

Unfortunately, this is partly why he got arrested, because he had the courage to stand up to the status quo like that.

I do not really believe in heroes, but if heroes exist, then he is one of them.

Yes, I know a lot of people in the United States who love Lee Kuan Yew and would like to apply his model to our own country. I suppose they imagine that they would be part of the elite and not some regular person forced to live under such oppressive circumstances.

It is a bit like the right-libertarians who propose a brutal, laissez-faire form of capitalism. They always imagine that they would be captains of industry under such a set up, and not some poor fellow working long hours in a dirty, unsafe factory for pennies an hour.

o well this is ok I guess

It's not hard to find locals who'll praise him.

Mr Kee posted [emphasis added]:

“I think I have never commented on this moron, for he never deserved any attention. But now that I’m speaking. I really hope and I will pay, for him to get raped in prison.”

Yeah, keep it classy, asshole

Wow. This case gives great insight into how insane Singapore is, and Amos Yee's video is very informative as well. What a capitalist paradise. I hope all of LKY's supporters will get unjustly persecuted by a dictator one day.
