I kindve understand historical materialism but not a lot
From what I know, history has been divided into tribal communism then slave society then feudalism then capitalism... But isn't this kinda untrue? Were all pre feudal societies slave societies and were all pre capitalist societies feudal societies? Like what was the mode of production in ancient Mesopotamia? It certainly wasn't slave based, was it?
Also. What were the classes under slave society? It seems this is the one mode of production that has been fleshed out the least

And what would the colonial era be considered? It had a lot of capitalist elements but it was also slave based, would it be a mixture? Why is it that society went from feudalism back to slave society?

All societies have a mixture of different class relationships; i.e Slave, Capitalist, Feudalism, Communism, and Ancient.
And while these can exist at the same time, there is always a dominant one. For instance, Capitalism is worldwide dominant system now. But isn't there still slavery in some parts of the world?
During the dark ages, feudalism for 1000 years. But weren't there still Slaves? And didn't early capitalist enterprises attempt to rise?
In southeast Asia, there is a tribe of people without a word for 'want' or 'need', or the concept of time. They live rather like a type of primitive communism.
Under slave society the class relationship was the Master and Slave. Not only was the slave exploited, but his very being was property that could be sold or done as you wished with. Problem was slavery, in the US at least, was based off of relationships. How does a society reconcile the slavery of a person they have a relationship with? One way is from installing these points of view.
Master: The slave is a lesser being so it needs me to civilize it, and deserves to be my property.
Slave: Master takes care of me; feeds me, clothes me. I love master.

And what would the colonial era be considered? It had a lot of capitalist elements but it was also slave based, would it be a mixture? Why is it that society went from feudalism back to slave society?Because capitalists discovered a cheap source of labor, for the time being. However, as capitalism developed, slavery became less and less productive and more and more expensive, and this, among other factors, eventually allowed the slaves to free themselves, aided by the pro-abolitionist section of the bourgeoisie.
