The letter below, written by a student who recently heard some of the families speak at the national conference for April 14, captures the heart and spirit of why people from all walks of life, all nationalities and all ages are invited to come to this dinner, show your support for these families, learn, and contribute to building a powerful movement nationwide to STOP police murder of Black and Brown people. April 14 will be a day to Stop Business as Usual! No School! No Work! *Funds raised will contribute to the thousands of dollars needed to spread the word and organize people into action for April 14. Dearest Stolen Lives Families,
As the Stop Mass Incarceration Network, and other activists, prepare for a national day of action against police brutality on April 14th, we face many challenges, but all of them pale in comparison to the hardship and loss that you have endured, and whenever we find our motivation and resolve waning, it is to you that our thoughts turn -- not only how each of you has lost something precious and irrecoverable, not only how you never saw any justice done for that loss, but how you still struggle against intimidation and repression every day to raise your voice on behalf of the loved ones that were stolen from you.
We want the whole world to hear that voice, and to understand that loss. For far too long, the national media has either ignored you, or worse, besmirched and slandered you and your loved ones who are no longer with us and unable to defend themselves. That must change. People must be made to see that your loved ones were ordinary people who lived lives like any other, that they did nothing to "ask for" or "deserve" the horror that befell them, and you.
We want you to have the opportunity to share your stories, and to remember your loved ones as some*thing more than victims. We want to offer you the chance to bypass the bias and censorship of the national media and do what they won't let you do: to tell us about your sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews-- not just to grieve their deaths, but to celebrate their lives, and affirm their humanity. What made them laugh? What made them cry? What was the greatest time you shared together? The hardest time? What were the passions and ambitious and dreams they held that will forever go unfilled because someone in authority decided in a split-second that they were somehow less-than and not worth protecting.
No words can capture the depths of pain and anguish that you must feel every day and every time these wounds are opened anew. The dignity, the poise, and the courage you've shown already is beyond extraordinary, and to ask any more of you than you have already given is audacious, we realize. However, we also truly believe that you have a unique power to reach hearts and minds, eyes and ears, that might otherwise remain closed and oblivious to what is happening in our society, and we humbly ask you to lend us that power, in the hopes that one day, stories like yours need never be told again.
