Meh I would take it to seriously considering the source but still...

Arab Newspaper Says Al Qaeda Has Ukrainian Nukes
Sun Feb 8,12:24 PM ET Add World - Reuters to My Yahoo!

CAIRO (Reuters) - A pan-Arab newspaper said Sunday that the al Qaeda organization led by Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) bought tactical nuclear weapons from Ukraine in 1998 and is storing them in safe places for possible use.

There was no independent corroboration of the report, which appeared in the newspaper al-Hayat under an Islamabad dateline and cited sources close to al Qaeda, which the United States blames for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The newspaper said al Qaeda bought the weapons in suitcases in a deal arranged when Ukrainian scientists visited the Afghan city of Kandahar in 1998. The city was then a stronghold of the Taliban movement, which was allied with al Qaeda.

Al Qaeda would use the weapons only inside the United States or if the group faced a "crushing blow" which threatened its existence, such as the use of nuclear or chemical weapons against its fighters, the paper quoted its sources as saying.

Ukraine inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union but in 1994 it agreed to send 1,900 nuclear warheads to Russia and sign up to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

After the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, a former Russian National Security Adviser, Alexander Lebed, said that up to 100 portable suitcase-sized bombs were unaccounted for. Moscow has denied such weapons existed.

Lebed said each one was equivalent to 1,000 tons of TNT and could kill as many as 100,000 people.

Al-Hayat did not say how many weapons al Qaeda bought or say who exactly had provided them.

A Pakistani government official said Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) was expected to visit Islamabad soon to discuss nuclear proliferation, after a top scientist there admitted passing atomic program secrets to third parties.

The United States has repeatedly said its worst fear is that a group like al Qaeda might obtain access to weapons of mass destruction and use them against the American people.

Anyway, if they really have nukes, you'd think they would have used them by know. 2 out of 3 known Al-Queda members have already been captured and it's clear that they have no problem with possibly killing civilians and the 2 wars must surely anger them.

I highly doubt that that's true. Just more propaganda to frighten the United States. If Al Quaeda could nuke the US, they would have.
But I think we can all be pretty sure that eventually some terrorist group will get their hands on nuclear weapons, and the consquences will not be pretty...

I somewhat doubt the truth there also. However I do remeber hearing a few years back about Al-Queda trying to buy some briefcase Nukes.

Those are called "dirty bombs". While they are radioactive, the fact is that they are not really dangerous. The reason that terrorists do this in to strike fear in the civilian population thus that is not considered a weapon of mass destruction.

Just more propaganda to frighten the United States

Or more propaganda provided indiscretely by the Bush administration so that he had more reason to 'take out' Saddam and his 'link' to al-Quida. No matter what the source, Bush has influence.

I would disagree that they're not dangerous. They spread hazardous radioactive material all over the blast area. They're not even close to being on the same level as nukes, but I wouldn't be so fast to write them off as harmless.

It doesn't really matter because after all the U$ have as many nukes than dumb citizens...which seems to be enough to destroy the whole universe.

So the real threat is the country which has proven that they can use them and used them and keep at least 20k of them.

The greatest thing about the fall of communism in Europe - the opening of former soviet military equipment for sale to the general public.

That article only mentioned 1,900 of the nukes the Ukraine had. What about the other 300 (this is not including the 200 that dissappeared following the fall of the CCCP)? So now we have 500 soviet nukes unaccounted for. Hrm. This article now makes it seems suprising to find that Al-Quaeda may have possession of one.
