So I recently got this book the other day....

....And I freakin' love it.

This is a collection three short novels by Takiji Kobayashi, who was the master of prole lit in Japan, and martyr for the cause (he was tortured to death by secret police in 1933). It was the eponymous story, The Crab Cannery Ship, that I bought this for. The other two stories aren't half bad, either.

This is the old-school kind of prole lit. It's relatively short, straight-forward in its writing, and loaded with descriptions of terrible working conditions and cruel bosses. There isn't much character development, but that's not the point of the story. The point is to inspire other working class readers and sympathizers to rise up and revolt.

This book made something of a comeback in its home country a few years ago, after the 2008 crash. It's now had four manga adaptations, two stage productions, and a new film version.

If you get a chance, read it. It's a great, inspiring read.

I read this exact same collection of stories not too long ago. I agree with you, it is a great read. It is really interesting how relevant these stories are to modern issues even though they were written many decades ago.

If you liked The Crab Cannery Ship, I would also recommend Kappa by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Kappa is more of a fantasy-satire, but it contains a biting critique of capitalism. It is hilarious too, in a black comedy sense.
