Any cricket fans? Gonna watch the world cup starting in a few days? In the last year, I've really gotten back into cricket, so I'm quite excited for all the games coming up. Been keeping an eye on the warm-up matches that having been happening last few weeks too.

So... who's you think is going to win?

No, because its impossible to understand the rulez, its so uneventfull the players wear knitted sweaters and have tea breaks and a match takes aproxametly longer than a lifetime.
Say what you want about field hockey but at least our posh bastard sport is exiting and the players, male and female are hot to look at.

I didn't expect a reply (i.e. my reply was a joke)... Guess you really do dislike it, haha.

Funnily, enough, in the long form of the game, test matches, the game would go until a team won. In the modern form, it is limited to 5 days.

From there, in the 70s, they developed a shorter form of the game, one-day matches, or limited-overs matches (consisting of a maximum of 50 "overs" of batting per team). The ICC Cricket World Cup developed from this.

In more recent years, an even shorter form of the game, twenty20 (or simply, t20) has developed. Each team is limited to 20 overs batting in this case. It has become so popular and lucrative, it now dominates the cricket world. Unlike the longest form of the game, the t20 matches is much more fast paced and exciting and is more popular with the youth than the forms.

Anything else about cricket you want me to talk about?

If you think this is boring, I could go on for alot longer, just give me more bait.

But in all seriousness, it's only as boring as alot of other sports out there. But of course, if you grow up with a sport, and thus it's culture, as you would know, you get a taste for it. You should see how crazy about cricket people are in the sub-continent. They have riots over there, so fans have to be fenced (huge barbed wired ones) off from the field. Infact, international matches are currently banned in Pakistan due to safety issues.

You a field hockey fan? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Australia and the Netherlands generally the two best nations in the sport, both in men's and women's? I don't really follow the sport, just heard bits and pieces on the news, etc.

Nah, not a fan, but I watch the occasional match of hockey and football. The only sport i really used to follow where the K-1 grandprix. Of the in England popular sports besides footbal I like rugby and snooker. Bowls I can be strangly transfixed by if I stumble on it on telly. American sports I like fastpaces sports like basketball and ice hockey
Cricket is for me a sport in the category of baseball, American football and tennis (to a certain extent), too long and too dificult rules which I'm not intrested enough to learn.

Australia unfortunately. :)

I found better cricket than baseball, but it's boring like all games invented by Brits. Nonetheless, in Twenty20 version it's pretty colorful spectacle. ODI are too long and Australian time zone is very uncomfortable for me.

sports like basketball

I fucking love basketball. Was thinking to do a thread on the NBA sometime maybe.

I can agree with that. I also find golf and soccer, for example, a bit slow for me. I can watch them, the former more than the latter, but without any cultural context, I'm quite impatient.

Australia unfortunately

Strangely enough, despite where I'm from, I hate the Australian team. Always have. Dickhead jocks (though, I guess you could say that about most sports people). However, I love them when they lose!

I hope New Zealand, or South Africa, maybe India as an outside chance (they pretty out of form though...), to win. Anyone but Australia. But yeah, unfortunately, I think Australia are the favourites... :(

^^The best solution for me would be West Indies - a team from non-existent state. :) But they are apparently too weak and Australia are hosts and unfortunately they lose very rarely on home soil...

Funnily enough, I grew up being a big West Indies fan. Brian Lara was my childhood hero.

From the early 90s, West Indies have been the most inconsistent team ever. Not necessarily lacking talent, just performing on a regular basis. Before that, they were arguably the best team ever.

Do people play cricket in Poland?

^^
Yes, usually immigrants from Middle Asia. :) We have national team composed of them. :)

As a sport, it's completely exotic. That's why it's attractive to me. I started to be interested in cricket, when in my learning of English I started to watch Sky News. Certainly the sport News were the most interesting because they were the most authentic. And initially I thought that Englishmen that are known of jokes are doing jokes of this cricket. Then it was too much about cricket to be just joke. I was amazing to me to be interested in sport completely unknown to me. All those wickets, bats, overs, innings... I had to know more about cricket. So I know now. :)

The Rugby? I've watched a game here and there, but I'm not from the part of Australia where that is popular. I grew up on Australian football. And cricket evidently.

Start your own thread punk!

I don't really like sports but i've seen way too much cricket, primarily county cricket, the ashes and the IPL and i'll no doubt catch a few matches as my brother's obsessed with the sport.

Weirdly i think T20's dull because of all the boundaries. Test matches can be interesting because of how the pitch can degrade over the days. But i think finding the ground interesting in a sport is quite damning for it though lol.

Well. cricket is definitely more popular world wide. But I watch 6 nations too. However my favorite version of it is Rugby7. :)

I love those Aussie Rules football results. Almost always above 100. :) There happens very much. :)

What country are you from? Somewhere in the UK maybe? Just wondering because I'm hella surprised someone (tuwix) from Poland is into (or even knows about) cricket. It's mostly limited to commonwealth nations.

Also... i can't believe Ireland beat the West Indies. I'm happy for Ireland, but man, I have a huge soft spot for the Windies, so I'm kinda bummed... They may miss the quarter finals now...

^^ Unfortunately they may...
Professionals have lost to amateurs. I don't know if there is in Ireland a one man who gets his salary form cricket only. Even Afghanistan have professionals. They are paid an enormous salary something about US$100 but they are professionals...

^^ Don't you think that Gayle is starting to mean as much as Brian Lara to West Indies?

Palmares

Chris Gayle is definitely the player with the most talent in the current West Indies line-up. He is a bit more of a slogger than Lara, less technical skill, and less consistent. However, when at his best, he isn't too far off Lara. With all the focus of Gayle's slogging, you forget he, like Lara, is one of a select few players who have scored triple centuries, but also like Lara, has scored two of them (technically, one of Lara's was a 400).

This innings below was said (by wisden) to be the second best ever test match innings:
