Raul is a stalinist, so the belt will be tightened on Cuba...but the US will stick there fucking nose in that business and ruin it.

i also think that Raoul is going to be leader, and that u.s.a will attack (or something like that) to Cuba when Fidel (and Raoul) dies...
so i guess that will be the end of Cubas socialism...what a shame!
u.s.a will use some stupid excuse and then happens what we have seen in Afganistan and Iraq....!

I think that first Raul will take power but after him Im not sure. I hope that the Cubans see and choose to have a socialist country, because if they dont, I dont think that it bodes well for Cuba.. I think that the cubans are enough educated to know their own good and dont take after the Capitalist countries.

Actually, I doubt that Raul will take power after Fidel, remember that Raul is also an aging man now. Also, Raul does not share the popularity of his brother. I honestly believe that a younger member of the current government will be elected as president.
Bush has also set up some group in the US with Colin Powel at the helm which is discussing and planning for what exaxtly the US will do when Castro is no longer around. I believe this "Post-Castro Planning committee" are due to release a report in May of this year. Why would the USA be making plans for a future Cuba if they were not planning intervention when Castro is gone?
Will the USA invade after Castro? I doubt it, The US government knows fine well that Cubans will not simply sit back and watch their old enemy march through Havana. Plus, Latin American revolutionary and perhaps terrorist movements will cause mayhem for the Americans should they invade Cuba, not to mention to huge international sympathy for Cuba and United Nations support. Cuba is very different from Iraq.
I think that that the Cuban Exile community in Florida will play a large part in US future action. The USA will tempt Cuba to move towards American political ideals through promise of lifting the blockade and travel ban, and also intense pressure to reform, or remain totally isolated.
Difficult time lay ahead for the people of Cuba, and in the end it can be only them that decide if they will stay on the Socialist course, or bend to the will of Imperialism. Time will tell.

Fidel has had what...45 years to sort this out? I'd say that the old man probably has a long long list of potentials, but we are led to think its Raul so nothing unfortunate befalls these other men and women prematurely.

I have a hard time believing the island will just succumb to the will of capitalism - they've stuck it out for a long time now... and they're doing far better than any other latin american nation.

I agree, that is very likely. But if the succession is quick and the party keeps itself in line perhaps not.

Look at the unexpected resistence the US is recieving just now in Iraq, a nation where the huge majority hated their govenment. Imagine what would happen if the USA invaded Cuba, wher the huge majority support their government. Why would the USA risk all this bother when, in the end, all they ever wanted was Fidel out of the way.
They will use more subtle methods of gaining influence over Cuba.

I disagree.Cuba is a thorn in the US's thigh as long as they are socialist. They have been ever since they proclaimed themselves socialist. It drives the imperialists crazy that there is a little socialist island in their backyard and there is nothing they can do about it at this point.

My Ancient history teacher who also teaches all history and english was talking about fidel dying an old man and when he does the next presidetn whoever it is wont live up to expectations and the cuban mass will have another revolution and install another dictator similar to Fidel.

I suspect it will be a U.S. invasion, but not in the military sense, a political and business invasion, there will be resistance to this though.

They will elect a new president, and mourn a beloved comrade. No harder than that. Fidel is NOT Cuba, he is just a very popular man. The Cuban socialist system can survive without him.

Fidel is NOT Cuba
Exactly right. Socialism can survive without him, but, it will be more difficult for whoever takes over to keep the people united, and also keep the US of their backs. Fidel is not Cuba, but he is a very important part of it for many Cubans.
Perhaps it should not be so much what the US will do, but what the Miami exile community will do that will determine Cuba's future. If Fidel goes, and they flock back to Cuba, then they could stand to gain greater influence and power (most likely with the backing of the US of course)
