View Full Version : Terrible 'anti'-imperialism ("anti-imps")

I just had to waddle through the facebook page of the Antiimperialistische Aktion, which was the most agonisingly mind numbing thing I had to do in recent history. God, why do some people have such dreadful politics?

It was even worse than I expected, including support for far-right New Russia commander Motorola ("anti-imperialist hero!), Ramzan Kadyrov (wait, that despotic autocratic ruler of Chechenya? Yes, that one), and stupid shit like speculating on the Charlie Hendo attack being an inside job because walking around casually in military-like clothing is so "professional" it must be a Western agents. Also, there wasn't that much blood when that police officer was shot at close range, and, as weapon exports, they infer that therefore it's all fake.

(I just wanted to vent).

yeah, i know, the otherwise for information decent "enough is enough" page also got a very annoying pro-sepratist/everything is a imperialist conspiracy slant. its infuriating, i thought these kind of batshit anti-imps died out together with the cold-war.

good that you mentioned it, haven't been looking at it for a long time, and now I can sort out "friends" who have liked this page.

Also this gem from the Workers World Party (which I guess is basically "anti-imp" politics).

"A few people passing by showed hostility to the demonstration, mostly calling the Red Youth “communists,” which the young people were proud to acknowledge in this period of capitalist collapse. But the prevailing attitude among those who stayed and listened to the speakers was curiosity about what was really going on in Korea. Others clearly opposed all the U.S. moves toward war and cheered on the DPRK.'

Sure, random bystanders cheering on the DPRK........

You might have heard about it since you live next to Germany, but there were plenty of antiimperialists at these "Montagsdemos" allying with fascists and conspiracy wingnuts.

Isn't supporting fascists just a logical end result of this kind of degenerated tankie politics?

There's that weird YouTube guy stormcloudsgathering that seems to have weird hippy tankie politics. At first he sounded like a conspiracy theorist with non aggression views. Then he started supporting Assad and the DNR and it got weird.

Also speaking of Germany my history teacher is from there and she's teaching us in college, so liberally less biased. At the end of our first class yesterday she said she teaches history "the German way" which she said "doesn't spare uncomfortable details". So German history programs are also fucked up right? Or is education here really that bad in comparison?

not sure about your bottom line? Do you think that those lessons are better than the history lessons you've been used to?

Better, yes. The 'exposure' of the western atrocities however is pretty liberal and not much news. She also stresses how much we see civilizations like the native americans as savages despite no one saying that.

not 100% sure what you mean by that, but somehow I think that's still important to talk about. In Germany, there's some trend in saying "fuck what our grandparents did, we had no responsibility for the Holocaust, let's move on already". But I don't think there's any moving on by disconnecting from this "rupture in civilization" (Zivilisationsbruch, don't know if this term is familiar in AE btw, it's a term exclusively used in this Third Reich context exploring the industrialized killing of people within what was considered a modern civilization) when in fact there are current tendencies in Germany that I consider able to commit horrendous crimes, especially against refugees and Jews.

Does this stuff exist beyond the web?

I'm probably a "bad" (in your eyes only) anti-imperialist -- in retrospect I support the the intervention in East Timor (I was abstentionist at the time and plenty busy with other stuff). I'm not down with countries invading other countries.

I have signed petitions recently for the release of prisoners in Saudi Arabia and the USA, so maybe that's imperialistic on my part? I don't understand these levels of abstraction.
