This story for the DailyKos reminds us what you do with fascists. (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/01/17/826081/-The-day-the-Klan-messed-with-the-wrong-people?detail=email)
Quick summary:
In the mid-50s, the Grand Dragon of the South Carolina KKK decided to intimidate the local black people. Said black people responded by arming themselves and shooting at the Klan motorcade.
Then, the Klan decides to start fucking with the local Lumbee tribe. Said Lumbee then armed themselves, then raided a Klan rally and started shooting, taking several banners and hoods as trophies.
Remember, non-violent resistance only works when your enemy has a conscience. Otherwise, you fight back with fists, clubs and guns.

They fought and lost. That's sometimes the fate of revolutionaries convicted enough to do more than talk.
And how dare you suggest that communities being terrorised shouldn't use force to defend themselves against fascists.

@ the idler; Armed self-defense and voluntarism are not the same, though the latter likes to pretend its the former...
But you are basically a pacifist, or worse, a liberal who trusts on the pigs and army.

If only these organisations had adhered to the tried and tested methods of the SPGB, then we would have almost definitely reached communism by now

That's not what I've said at all anywhere and has never been my view. This kind of response happened last time I criticized the keyboard guevaras.
Use of force is justified against those terrorizing communities but it is not inherently revolutionary. The question is why violent 'revolutionary' groups have lost.

The point is that non-violence is ineffective. That does not automatically designate the use of violence alone as effective, but necessary. The groups mentioned did not fail because they utilized violence - the possibility of their 'victory' was non-existent upon inception. Because, while their actions may be commended, they did not strive for any real identifiable victory - their actions were a tragic and desperate last stand against the backdrop of what appeared to be a hopeless situation. They were the dying cry of a struggle which refused to go quietly.

Okay but the claim being made is that non-violence is especially ineffective presumably in relation to revolutionary politics. What evidence is there to suggest that this is the case? That use of force repelled the Klan? Excuse me if I remain to be convinced that fetishing either violence or non-violence as a kind of political dogma is effective in respect of achieving revolution.

Yep I think I've read it. Gene Sharp writes from the opposite perspective - in favour of pacifism.
Have you read Counterpower by Tim McGee? Much more interesting as to why movements fail.

As usual and as always their responsibility is to fight corruption. Regardless whether it's in the form of corporatism or governmental. That's just my perspective of this.
