Led Zeppelin by a million fucking miles.
I can only think of about 5 good songs by Sabbath.
A few of which are simplistic tracks, with repetitive melodies, and mediocre guitar parts.

I don't think the two bands are similar but Black Sabbath was better. War Pigs alone is better than most anything Zeppelin ever did. And don't anybody even dare bring up "Stairway...", FUCKING BORING!!!!!!!!!

Zeppelin is great, don't get me wrong, but there are better things around.

Jimmy James and the Blue Flames
The Band of Gypsies
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
(seeing a pattern here?)
Cream
Santana
Jefferson Airplane
The Doors
B.B. King
John Coltrane and his Quintet

just some examples I could pull out of my head.

hell, the Beach Boys or the Mamas and the Papas are more complicated than Black Sabbath. Leonard Nimoy, even :)

You can't compare the John Coltrane Quintet to Led Zeppelin, dude.
I disagree about all of those except the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I like those bands, but I think Zeppelin so amazing covered the hard rock of their time with immense superiority to the rest.
Jefferson Airplane is not such a great band. They're good, but not Zeppelin-good. The rest are pretty much comparable.
And I'm glad you mentioned BB King! He is one of the best guitarists I've ver heard, yet he doesn't seem to get much recognition.

Sabbath all the way. The comparisons so far mostly seem to be based off of Sabbath songs from Paranoid. That neglects their best work, like most of the songs off of Vol. 4 or Master of Reality. And sure, maybe Sabbath was simpler than Zepplin, but I don't give a shit about Jimmy Page's "guitar god" status or Plant's girly ass vocals. Sabbath was just tough rock 'n roll like it should be played. You can have all the Led Zepplin you want. I'd take Sweet Leaf or Children of the Grave over any Zepplin song any day of the week.

It's too hard to decide...

I prefer Led Zeppelin however because overall I feel like most LZ songs are better than BS's, it's like you are guaranteed to have better music if you listen a LZ song.

Anyway, both bands also have crappy songs, as most bands do.

No bad songs eh, ever listen to "In Through the Out Door"? And face it "Stairway to Heaven" is mediocre at best. I could think of some others given a few minutes, "Whole Lotta Love", Communication Breakdown, "Black Dog", 'Rock and Roll". Musically those are good songs but they are the lyrical equivalent of shit.

Ok, maybe in those last 2 or 3 albums there were some songs that weren'y great, but certainly not bad!
I love Stairway to Heaven. I think it's a great song. I may be a bit tired of it, but it still rocks!

Yes without question redcanada Jimmy Page is a better guitar player than Ozzy.

Oh and Victor (aka Redzeppelin) I still prefer Victor.

Please review the lyrics to the following songs"
"Whole Lotta Love", "Communication Breakdown", "Black Dog", 'Rock and Roll"

I judge lyrics by meaning and topic mostly.

Now I'm not saying all of their lyrics suck I just get tired of people sucking at the collective dick of Led Zeppelin as if it is the holy fucking grail. That each shit that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page take is gold and that you shouldn't dare question such wisdom. I have a few words for such people, the Firm and the Honeydrippers.

All in all I just find the subject matter and presentation of the lyrics of old Black Sabbath to be better than those of LEd Zeppelin., But hey it is all subjective isn't it.

Have a nice day, time for a beer.

Dr. Rosenpenis
10th February 2004, 02:12
The songs are about relationships and sex.
So what?
Communication Breakdown is about a guy whose girl is giving him a "nervous breakdown"
Whole Lotta Love is about a guy who wants to do a girl, it seems and... well, the lyrics aren't the most poetic, but big deal!
Black Dog is about a fella who wants a woman, or has a woman... or something like that
Rock 'n Roll is about a guy who wants to rock.
The lyrics to all of these songs are not bad at all!
They're very appropriate.
And they may not be the most poetic, but that's not what rcok 'n roll is about! You dig?

I had to null my vote because I really don't care for either of these bands however if I was forced to make a choice, I would go with Led Zeppelin 'cos it's easier to to get baked, throw out some THC Philosophy and then screw when listening to Zeppelin.

i liked big brother way way way more than any of her other bands. full tilt boogie was ok as backup but it was just way too rehearsed. they were beautiful on "me and bobby mcgee" and "little girl blue" but i never dug their sound too much. big brother was just so free and way out there. like on "summertime" the guitar is just awesome. and percussion with the cymbal that little beat it has every now and then. and when they open with those jabby notes for "ball and chain." and of course "piece of my heart" where they just match janis perfectly. that song is so up and down. it's awesome.

What's so hard to believe?

Ozzy, at the time was a better singer. Geezer just as good as JPJ on the bass, Bill Ward looks better in a leotard than Bonzo. And as for Page vs Iommi, Page may have been better technically but that doesn't always make for better songs.

Black Sabbath was always way cooler than Zep. Zeppelin are a "safe bet", that's why you hear them on the radio all the time.
"I don't want to offend anybody so I'll play some Led Zeppelin."

Zeppelin's songs are not "pure genius" as you say Victor, if they were their lyrics wouldn't include such crap as:

Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
Oh, oh, child, way you shake that thing, gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way, watch your honey drip, can't keep away.

*Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah. Ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah.

I gotta roll, can't stand still, got a flame in my heart, can't get my fill.
Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head.

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

or Hey, girl, stop what you're doin'!
Hey, girl, you'll drive me to ruin.
I don't know what it is that I like about you, but I like it a lot.
Won't let me hold you, Let me feel your lovin' charms.

*Communication Breakdown, It's always the same,
I'm having a nervous breakdown, Drive me insane!

Hey, girl, I got something I think you ought to know.
Hey, babe, I wanna tell you that I love you so.
I wanna hold you in my arms, yeah!
I'm never gonna let you go,'Cause I like your charms.

What can't you believe? There are still twice as many Zeppelin votes as there are Sabbath votes. We're the silent majority.

OK, so it's 23 to 12. Not completely double, but anyone who thinks Sabbath were in any way better musicians or artists than Hendrix should have already been taken out back and shot, so I think their votes can be effectively discounted ;)

I also happen to think that some of Led Zeppelin's lyrics are fantastic, with or without the context of the song.

For example, "Ten Years Gone":

As it was, then again it will be
And though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it's got so far to go

Read the rest of the lyrics, it's all very good.

Dr. Rosenpenis
14th February 2004, 04:36
I can't believe so many of my comrades choose Black Sabbath, with one of their most famous songs being Iron Man(!!!) with the most dreadfuly boring melody and if you wanna talk about bad lyrics...

Yes, we are winning, though. :)
