Most militias out there seem to be run by 1776 revolutionary wannabes who think Obama is a socialist and they have skewed reactionary views. To be honest most of the gun community have reactionary views. If any serious sort of instability comes up these guys will be hunting for anything on the left and holding signs and demonstrating is all well and good in times of peace but organizing an armed defense would be necessary. Are there any militia's that are socialist/communist or would I have to start my own? And if I do how would I go about doing that? Could I just start a party that gets involved in communist activities like protests, rallies, literature and meetings while doing armed training on the side? Are there any historical examples?

Take a look at the Socialist Rifle Association (facebook.com/SocialistRifleAssociation). I don't know if they're a serious organization or not, but I think that it would be a good place to start there if you want to get in touch with like-minded people in the US.

Most of people living in the United States have reactionary views. Many have guns as well.

Any adversary can only hunt for what it knows to be looking for - easy way to avoid becoming prey is to simply fly under the radar and resist detection.
It makes more sense to build and intentionally grow clandestine cell network that can work to exert political influence among population by covertly directing the overt non-underground movements.
There is a reason militias have no power and are basically a pastime for reactionary military enthusiasts (most of whom are unemployable "riff-raff" left over from imperialist war) - they have guns but no intelligence, structure or specific political goals.

You should not join anything that claims to be a communist militia, nor should you start your own.
If you really are interested in getting some kind of basic military training, there are plenty of (legal and non-suspicious) ways of doing that. Hell, you could just sign-up with some reactionary militia as an infiltrator and learn whatever you want from them.
Could I just start a party that gets involved in communist activities like protests, rallies, literature and meetings while doing armed training on the side?
No. Each one of these activities needs to be operated by compartmentalized cells that have no knowledge of details about one another or their plans.
Insurrection is not a plaything. Don't mix business with recreation.
Are there any historical examples?
No, because any such group would either fall apart due to lack of structure or end up getting shut down by the FBI in very early stage because openly forming any such group would lacking in understanding of operational security and would not attract serious recruits who know anything of tradecraft.
I don't know if they're a serious organization or not
They advertise their existence on facebook, of course they are not serious.

The OP isn't talking about forming a clandestine cell organization, shesh. He is talking about finding a way to combine socialism with firearms training.
@OP
I think your best bet would be to talk to or join with members of your local socialist party and see if any of them wish to form a militia. Party official or unofficial, its a good jumping off point. Also I'd check your state's gun laws to make sure that you don't get you and other members thrown in prison. I'd expect a socialist militia would receive more scrutiny then the current right wing militias.

Historical examples? The Black Panthers come to mind. There were also some armed labor conflicts in the early 20th century, including miners in West Virginia, but these were, I think, pretty informal militias, formed by immediate necessity.
You could start out by learning how to shoot on a basic level and going to a shooting range that rents guns out for use at the range. I don't know what part of the country you're in, so they may not exist in your area. They're mostly populated by old white guys with conservative views, so maybe hide the sickle and hammer pin while you're there unless you want to argue instead of shoot.
You can also shoot targets in most national forests, if you know anyone who is willing to show you how to shoot and owns guns, and is hopefully knowledgeable about gun safety.

You are correct, I probably should have clarified that I didn't want to start some terrorist cell. I wanted to know if any socialist or communist parties offer firearms training to members and/or military tactics. I would hope so since many right wing groups like the Tea Party and fascists (even worse) have guns I would think the left has a counter to this.
