Hi all!
The name (er, the alias, rather) is Alex and I'm from the rural Midwest. A little bit about myself and why I joined revleft, I am a recent university graduate and currently an interpreter and English (as a second language) instructor at a public high school. I grew up poor, though my parents have always held full time jobs. I suppose it was that which first irked me about our cultural and economic system. I was always told (a hyper conservative is never far away in the Midwest and they are really fond of this line) that 'if you work hard in this world, you'll get ahead' the classic American Dream. But watching my parents sell the best days of their life making a few men wealthy and they themselves gaining only enough to survive, has lead me to the only logical result that so many of you have come to as well; our system is broken. That it was a lie, that luck and connections and most importantly, class origination were far more effective means to get ahead in this word. A fact that I became disgusted by.
I'm not content to sell my days for a little gold, I'm not content to live under the wage slavery my parents do. I'm not sure how a single person can break free from such an overwhelming and entrenched capitalist society like ours, but talking about it, naming the problem and normalizing an opposition is a necessary first step, and something of which I am happy to be a part. I've joined revleft because I want to connect with people who recognize that the world doesn't have to stay a bad place, that poverty, hunger, and injustice aren't just facts of life, but facts of the life we've made for ourselves, and can unmake if we want.
