But how is following the rules "denying your own freedom to do otherwise"? Couldn't you maintain the personal freedom while using it to play by the rules?

Its not so much playing NY the rules as allowing your actions to be determined by the rules.

Well, if you have the ability to allow your actions to be determined by the rules, then that would mean you have personal freedom, at least in regards to your ability to let the rules determine your actions or not.
