I converted to Islam about 7 years ago. Ever since I have had fights with my dad because he's a Christian and I'm not. I am so sick of looking around and seeing all those crosses and Jesus this and Jesus that stuff. I feel like in this country I am having Christianity crammed down my throat at every turn! Marxism teaches tolerance for all people so why am I always being harassed because I'm Muslim? Why do these Christians have to advertise their religion on every streetcorner? Why can't they just practice their religion in silence like the rest of us? Let me know what you guys think. And if you have any idea on how to deal with my dad when he gets on one of his Christian rants, let me know.

Marxism teaches tolerance for all people

what? no it doesn't. rather, perhaps, i should ask; what do you mean by "tolerance for all people"?

And if you have any idea on how to deal with my dad when he gets on one of his Christian rants, let me know.

move out of the house and stay with friends.

Even if it did why would that effect how Christmas in the US is dealt with?

If you really want to get back at your dad wish him happy holidays instead of merry Christmas. Fuck you dad!!

Yeah, Marxism is all about love.

Oh I wouldn't go so far as to say "f you dad" because he has taken care of me very well since my mom died, and I do respect and love him. But I will start using happy holidays instead of mentioning Christmas.

You say Marxism teaches tolerance, yet you want to force Christians out of the public? Isn't tolerance about willingly enduring annoyances?

I assume this was sarcasm/parody of anti-Muslim attitudes?

If I remeber correctly the orthodox marxists of the 2nd international viewed religion as the private matter of each. There is nothing overtly hostile to religion in the writings of Marx; the "sigh of the oppressed...opium of the people" is a very tolerant, understanding and mild position even though it implicitly views religion as untruth. Some say historical materialism is incompatible with any kind of religion and spiritual stuff, be that as it may.

The reason christianity is so obnoxious and domineering in the USA is because itīs a very integral and vital part of the ideological apparatus of capitalism in the US. It is no longer just religion in such cases but state ideology (despite formal pretentions of separation of church and state).

What to do about your fathers rants: I really donīt know what to recommend. It has been going on for 7 years so I imagine you have tried a few things. Have you asked him calmly what he intends to accomplish with his rants and harrasments?

I feel as though this thread might be suited more to the Mutual Aid and DIY forum since it relates specifically to the OP and their father, rather than a discussion of religious discrimination in a more general sense, so I'm going to move it.

Maybe it's personal. Is it not a problem for you to beleive in marxism and in Islam (i ask for islam because it's your religion). Both are compatible without opposition?

... Marxism teaches tolerance for all people so why am I always being harassed because I'm Muslim? ...

Maybe because neither your dad nor Missouri are Marxist?

I've got to echo other people here in asking, exactly how do you think that being Muslim and being Marxist square up? It's hardly compatible to believe in an invisible power making his will manifest while his believers submit to him, and the materialist conception of history. Massive and fundamental disconnect going on there in my view.

Christianity and Islam like all religions are both incorrect and, like most religions, both undermine human liberation and equality.

I disagree with all the anti-islam/antireligious crap here.
Unfortunately I don't have the time currently to explain why.

jesus is the most-quoted prophet in the qur'an and marx has jack shit to do with christians being christians obnoxiously

jesus is the most-quoted prophet in the qur'an

Which does not translate into more tolerance and respect towards muslims from christians these days (in the west).
