Urgent Action Alert:

Demand that Sheriff Release Rasmea from Solitary Confinement

We just learned that Rasmea Odeh has been in solitary confinement for the past 12 days, arbitrarily punished by her jailers at the St. Clair County Jail in Port Huron, Michigan. She is not allowed any contact with other prisoners. Confined to her cell all day, except at midnight for a few short minutes, Rasmea can’t make phone calls and can’t receive visitors. This isolation punishment was initially set for 6 days, but when she had expected to go back to general population, it has been extended two days at a time, without explanation.

We have grave concerns about Rasmea’s well-being. She has not been eating well, due to ongoing dental pain as well as other health issues exacerbated by the conditions of solitary confinement.

1. Today, please Call the office of St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon (810) 987-1700 [choose option 0],

Tell him you are calling about Rasmieh [sic] Odeh (inmate #144979), and ask that he release her from solitary confinement immediately.

2. Send the following message on the county’s webform (http://stopfbi.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=8b7315d854bc40ca9fa6dd227&id=dd6f38d491&e=daddc6d2c9):

“I am writing out of concern for the health and well-being of Rasmieh Odeh, inmate #144979. I urge you to take immediate action to end her solitary confinement.”

In addition, we are still waiting for Judge Drain to rule on the motion to release Rasmea from jail (http://uspcn.org/2014/11/28/update-on-the-legal-fight-to-freerasmeanow/). While she struggles in the horrible conditions described above, prosecutor Jonathan Tukel is maneuvering to delay the judge’s decision on her release. After the defense motion was filed, an amicus (or “friend-of-the-court”) brief was submitted by the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), supporting the defense and urging Rasmea’s release.

Typically, Judge Drain would simply decide on his own whether or not to accept an amicus brief, but in this case, he has agreed to a request by Tukel for time to submit a government motion to exclude the NLG brief. This government obstructionism is a callous and shameful tactic, and another example of Tukel and U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade’s disdain for fairness in Rasmea’s case.

Rasmea is coming home! She's to be released on $50,000 cash bond.

Judge rules that Rasmea can be released pending sentencing, once $50,000 bond is put up. Thank you all for your passionate work to help restore her freedom!

Judge rules that Rasmea can be released pending sentencing

We are pleased to announce that Judge Gershwin Drain just filed his ruling granting Rasmea's motion for reconsideration of his November 10th order revoking her bond. RASMEA IS COMING HOME!

The defense committee is working now to secure the money for her release. Please help us raise it by donating now! (http://stopfbi.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b7315d854bc40ca9fa6dd227&id=ed2b646e8b&e=b3b6009f90)

We also thank you all for your passionate work to help restore her freedom! We believe that the hundreds of letters to the judge, and the incredible response to the county jail's punitive measure of placing Rasmea in solitary confinement, played a major role in making this happen.

In the ruling, the judge wrote: "Defendant's dedication to her community work and the people that such work assists, as well as the presence of relatives in Chicago, demonstrates by clear and convincing evidence that she is not as significant a flight risk as originally believed."

In addition, all your letters to Rasmea helped keep her spirits up, and strengthened her resolve to continue challenging the unjust ruling, detention, and treatment in jail.

Of course, we are going to appeal the conviction, and there is still a ton of organizing work to be done, but today we celebrate and prepare to bring Rasmea home. Thank you all for your support!

Despite prosecution’s ploys, Rasmea to be freed

By staff

Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Rasmea Defense Committee

After close to an hour-long deposition, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel withdrew his motion to challenge the bond to be posted for Rasmea’s release. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Jebson led the questioning, asking whether the anonymous donor of the bond is actually a friend or only a political supporter, as well as challenging the donor’s views on Israeli military courts, the decisions of Judge Drain in the case, and the treatment of Palestinians by U.S. federal courts.

William Goodman, one of Rasmea’s defense attorneys, objected to all of these political questions as irrelevant to the proceedings. In addition, Jebson asked repeated questions implying that the Rasmea Defense Committee was raising money to be used to reimburse the donor.

At the end of the deposition, Tukel and Jebson retired to another room and returned 10 minutes later to report to Goodman that they would no longer be objecting to the bond, which will be posted tomorrow morning in the same courthouse where Rasmea was convicted a little over a month ago.

We are hopeful that Rasmea will be released a few hours after the bond is paid, and immediately return to her family and friends in Chicago.

We described Tukel’s legal maneuvering earlier today, and are pleased that Rasmea will be released, but also angered at the continued injustices of the U.S. Attorney’s motions. “Tukel and Jebson forced Rasmea to stay in jail for over a month, including the past two weeks in solitary confinement,” said Hatem Abudayyeh, spokesperson for the defense committee. “Their actions are nothing but punitive in nature and their questioning of the donor clearly affirms that their politics and ideology, not the law, govern their work.”
