View Full Version : Average age of people here.

Had an exchange with someone about this in another thread, and now I'm just kind of curious. My impression has been that most people here are in their mid twenties, but I could be wrong.

Edit: shit, there was supposed to be a poll with the following options:

15-17
18-20
21-23
24-26
27-29
30+

...but I forgot to check the box to include it. If a mod wants to add it in, that would be cool, otherwise people can just post a response instead.

I don't know if I'm just tired or something but I couldn't figure out how to add a poll, sorry (though I'm pretty sure it's possible).

I'm 24 though.

fixed it for you, though we had this poll a lot of times before and the results are skewered because only the youngest members and the older mods/old timer users tend to hang in chitchat and respond to polls like these

Thanks guys.

@sasha, that's kinda weird. When I browse this site, I never go to particular subforums; I just hit 'new posts' and see what threads are active. I guess I just assumed everyone did this, idk.

That's what I do too. Although on top of that I go to the subforums I moderate to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Chit Chat doesn't appear there, though, probably because it's hidden to guests. It's quite annoying; I have to manually check it.

It will be interesting to see the results. If there's a large bias towards '30+' then perhaps the bands were a little narrow at the lower end. If not... maybe they were OK.

only 1/28 of voters being under 18 surprises me.... a lot.

i am 23 and also am surprised that i'm in the bottom ~1/3 of voters age-wise

although between 21-26 accounts for over half of us if this sample is representative, which means that the ideal type of a revleft user is early-to-mid 20s, which is not unexpected

Blake's Baby
28th November 2014, 08:42
On current readings, you could say '53.57% is in the 21-26 age range'.

Or you could say '60.71% is in the 24+ age range'.

How well does the latter square with the 'not unexpected' type of 'early-mid 20s' user? I don't see a typical early-mid 20s user as being compatible with more than 60% of the user-base as being 24+. Those two things in my head don't go together.

Now 62.78% at 24+. The 'early-mid 20s' reading is becoming increasingly untenable, and the '30+' category increasingly inadequate, I'd argue.

24-26 = 25.00% (9 votes)
27-29 = 5.56% (2 votes)
30+ = 22.22% (8 votes)

together = 52.78%, meaning that about half of the population is 24+ and half of it is under 24

given that 21-23 = 25% and 24-26 = 25%, putting 50% between two categories, and additionally considering that 20 and 27 could be additionally included in the description "early-to-mid 20s", i think it's a very good fit. additionally, if we remove 21-26, there are 8 votes left below it and 10 votes left above it. the mode of the data set is 21-23/24-26 as well atm

Though I *did* have to go through a reactionary phase of admiration of right libertarianism before arriving at its other end though. ;)

actually that old adage is just straight up incorrect

Danigelis and collaborators Stephen Cutler of the University of Vermont and Melissa Hardy of Pennsylvania State University analyzed data from the U.S. General Social Surveys of 46,510 Americans between 1972 and 2004. While the surveys did not provide data for the same individuals at different stages, they represented snapshots of the changing attitudes of respondents in different age cohorts over time. The researchers corrected for the fact that the age groups at different survey times are made of up new members with unique baseline opinions.

The surveys assessed attitudes (http://www.livescience.com/3974-happiness-age-depends-attitude.html) on politics, economics, race, gender, religion and sexuality issues. In some cases, such as racial issues and questions of civil liberties for communists, the researchers measured a greater change toward liberalism in older people than in younger people.

"What we believe has happened, at least for the race relations, is that the older group, starting out at a position of significantly more negative feelings, had further to go," Danigelis told LiveScience.

If people really become more liberal as they age, why does common wisdom hold the opposite to be true?

People might find an average 60-year-old to be more conservative than an average 30-year-old, Danigelis said, but beware of extrapolating a trend. The older person, for example, might have started off even more conservative than he or she is now.
Danigelis also blamed the misconception on pervasive negative attitudes toward the elderly in our country, and stereotypes that depict seniors as rigid, ornery and set in their ways.

"If you look at any greeting cards about getting older you’ve got a wonderful lecture about age stereotypes," he said. "My colleague continues to cut out cartoons about getting old and trying to teach old dogs new tricks."

http://www.livescience.com/2360-busting-myth-people-turn-liberal-age.html

actually, you could recreate this "study" yourself or look at how true the trend is for specific attitudes, because they used general social survey data (http://www3.norc.org/GSS+Website/): http://sda.berkeley.edu/sdaweb/analysis/?dataset=gss12

To be fair to all the people in the "30+" category... what prompted me to make this thread was a discussion with someone about whether or not 25 was well above the average age of posters here. So, for that purpose, it wasn't really necessary to make specific age brackets past 30, plus the fact that making a poll on here requires you to give the number of brackets you intend to use before you actually get to write them out, and I was too lazy to add up a long list of them in my head, so I just stopped at thirty (which was six of them).

I'm 26, but if it's worth anything, I still consider e.g. 34 to be pretty young.

Time to cross the border and get wasted!

But seriously though, I never went to the US when I was under 21, so never experienced that dynamic. But damn, you get questioned on your ID for everything. I pretty much never get questioned for my age in my neck of the woods. Hell, when in the US, I get questioned on the ID I do have, including my fucking passport! One dumb cop preferred to see my Tasmanian driver's license!
