Why do you think that's the case? An outright lack of awareness, perceived differences of circumstance, belief in the national myth of Canada as a "tolerant" society lacking the institutional racism of the United States...?

Probably all of the above, especially the latter. I'd say that even on "the left" the acknowledgement of Canada's institutionalized racism has often been a token acknowledgement that really fails to really centre anti-racism in organizing.

I also, to some degree, suspect it reflects the relatively high level of success the state has had in viciously repressing autonomous P.O.C. and Indigenous organizing on one hand, and white-washing its history on the other.

Case in point, I think the first time a lot of white Nova Scotians realized there had been a Black civil rights movement - or even de jure segregation - here was when Viola Desmond was posthumously pardoned in 2010.
